I don't have that problem now that I picked up a Pelican. Gear is easily accessible - going out, and back in.
This system does everything you would ever want from a hard case. It stores your gear, transports your gear, all while keeping everything well protected. As a plus, I can use this for extra height during shoots, since I can stand on it no problem. I do have a couple of things that stand out to me though.
-It's HEAVY! I know, it can't be helped. If you lighten it, you take away from its sturdiness. I was surprised how heavy it was when it arrived at my door. I try to work around this by storing this on ground level - under my bed frame. I only complain about its weight when on stairs or other times when I can't roll it on its wheels.
-Padded dividers are difficult to adjust. My advice is that you take your time when you customize the compartments. All padding is attached from three sides, which means that you have three parts which can stick on by accident and cause frustration. And in case you have to detach and reattach because the measurements don't work, well.. that takes a while. It took me a good 40-60 minutes to get everything in the way I wanted it to.
-Not enough to store everything I want! I'm not talking about volume. I'm sure I can stuff everything in the case, but if I want everything organized and protected, there aren't really enough dividers. The limit here is the number of compartments. This makes it a challenge to fit everything you'd want to go in. Maybe I just have a lot.. You may have to get pretty creative about what goes where. I have to put my extra camera batteries in the same compartment as the nifty-fifty. I suppose this is where the lid organizer would help. The organizer adds extra compartments to your case. You can put your accessories in the organizer and use the precious padded space for more important gear. My gripe with the lid organizer though is that it takes the place of your egg crate foam. It worries me to think that my camera body or lenses might knock against my battery chargers.
All in all, the design is very good. It comes with some "problems," but I understand that working around those "problems" would cause compromises in the design.
Including the (highly recommended) accessory holder for the top, I can fit the following gear perfectly:
5D mk ii and 5d mk iii bodies with grips
4x canon camera batteries and 2 canon chargers
3x 600ex flashes and st-e2 transmitter
3x sto fen omni bounce diffusers
2x tamrac battery case w/ 32 total aa eneloop batteries
24-70 2.8 L ii w/ hood
70-300 4-5.6 L w/ hood
100 2.8 L macro w/ hood
135 2.0 L w/ hood
Canon intervalometer and remote shutter release
Pelican Cf memory card holder w/ up to 8 cards
Blackrapid shoulder and wrist straps
Pocket rocket lens cleaner and several microfiber cleaning cloths
The protection, durability, and design of this system (if contents fitted correctly) is absolutely incredible. True to the Pelican brand, this will withstand just about anything, but most importantly, it is nearly immune to moisture, dust, and moderate impacts, which are huge weaknesses in most non-rigid camera cases. At 220lbs, I would stand on this while full of gear without a second thought and it makes a passable seat when none are available.
This is the perfect size for overhead storage in flights and the wheels work pretty well on smooth surfaces such as airports and sidewalks. Traveling overseas with this offered great piece of mind, as nobody in their right mind should ever check expensive electronics to be mishandled and potentially stolen by airport staff. The design also allows the use of locks and I've found the addition of a security cable running through the locks and around a solid structure is a pretty effective deterrent when you are away.
When I need to take my gear into the field or run & gun on assignment, I use a Lowepro toploader and/or S&F cases & belt for whatever combination I need. This allows me to choose the right tools for the job from my Pelican case and its always nice knowing everything has a cozy and safe home when I'm finished.
Considering the substantial investments you make in camera gear, it only makes sense to protect your equipment with the best available solution. I my mind, it's the Pelican 1510 hands down.

I've been patronizing Pelican for decades since I discovered them to protect my diving equipment.
Then I used them for my photography and gun equipment.
Then i used these for about anything when traveling.
These are the best built hard case you can get without question in terms of performance and durability.
This latest case was purchased to house my headphone collection. I thought I had more than enough space, but it ended up to be a tight fit for half a dozen of my headphones including their cables and small accessories. It's due to the yellow padding which does take a lot of space. I keep forgetting how much ample padding it has which is exactly what it's built for.
The other headphones I use on a daily basis I can't fit inside any longer which is fine since I don't need to hide and remove from the case.
Highly recommended. I wouldn't go for any other brand.
I am flying with it for the first time this weekend - and in the event, I am asked to check it at the gate, I would have no worries about the safety of my gear. Part of me wishes I had purchased a slightly larger one, just to fit a bit more gear - but the ability to use it as a carry-on is certainly preferred.
