This is probably the best hard case I have owned (or looked at) for compact flash cards. Overbuilt like most Pelican cases, without being any larger than it needs to be.

I own both the Pelican 0940 and the 0945 compact flash cases. The 0945 is much improved over the 0940 for use (although I suspect the 0940 might survive more abuse). Where the 0940 held four cards in either a vertical or horizontal orientation the 0945 makes better use of space and holds 6 cards all in a horizontal orientation, without making the case significantly larger. The other change between the cases is that the rubber inserts of the 0940 have been replaced with a dense foam in the 0945 which does a better job of holding the cards in place.

I've got so many pelican cases, it's like I'm a product tester. I own the 940 case and love it. The 940 is hard to find now so I decided to buy the next version the 945. The 945 offers two more slots for CF cards, so I was happy to order one of the cases as well as a 915 for SD cards. I had no reservations knowing the build quality of the 940. Well I received both cases in the mail and quickly cut the blister pack open to check out the new cases. First impressions unfortunately are not good.

This case is nothing like the build quality on the 940 case. The 945 and 915 fails on several points.

The latch is impossible to open one handed. And even two handed is difficult. Poor execution. Anyone who says use a key or a coin is just silly, this is not a run and gun case.

Case looks to be of a lesser material and flexes more.

Interior insert is of a lesser material and cut wrong. I had to trim my CF case insert with a razor to have my cards fit correctly. Again not run and gun like the 940 case.

Maybe over time the latch will loosen and be workable, but the insert will not hold up to traffic.

One last note to Pelican, small cases are better some other color than black. That way you can find the case in the dark of a bag or another pelican case.

I own the 0940 and have been thrilled it (see my review) - absolutely rock solid and definitely waterPROOF. I received the 0945 and it pales in comparison. Flimsier plastic, and water RESISTANT. If I wanted water resistant, I'd use a ziplock. I don't trust this case compared to my 0940.

Another gripe... the 0940 interior is formatted in such a way that I can place the card horizontally or vertically. I use it this way: face down means the card is full. Face up but sideways means the card has been downloaded but needs formatted (deleted), and face up means the card is formatted and ready to go. The 0945 only lets me do face up or face down.

I bought this because it holds 6 Compact Flash Cards and that's how many I have. I've been using 2 Pelican Compact Flash Card cases that hold 4 cards each. Compared to them, this 6-card case is cheesy plastic and very hard to open. I won't be using this new case for very much - I'll be sticking with my old ones as they work better and are more solid and secure. I'm very disappointed with Pelican with this new case.

Don't buy this case. It is NOT the superior build quality you'd expect from Pelican. Being the owner of the SD card case Pelican "0910-015-110," I expected the same build quality. Right? WRONG. This CF case is poorly made. The lining inside is this cheap spongy crap (as opposed to the SD version where the liner is rubber). Worse, you need an army to even open the latch of the case. It hurts my fingers so bad! Definitely not worth my money at all. Super disappointed.

I almost didn't order it because so many reviews said it was way too difficult to open. Apparently this is something that the manufacturer has fixed. It opens easily with a quick pull and closes with a crisp snap, but would never pop open on its own. I wonder if they have changed the plastic that the case is made of, also, because this case is anything but flimsy. I feel confident that I could drop it off of a two story building without an issue. Also, the foam lining could not be better. It is firm (so I'm confident that the cards will be well damped against vibration and that it will provide ample cushioning against compression) yet the cards pop in and out perfectly. If I could change one thing I would make it a brighter color so it is less likely to be lost, but I know that color is a personal preference. Lastly, it is light and compact and fits comfortably in my hip pocket, which is where I prefer to keep my priceless memory cards until I can back them up.

If you're looking for a CF card case for more than four cards, buy this one!

A couple of years ago I wrote to Pelican and asked if they could make their memory card cases slightly bigger to allow more cards to fit in. Looks like they did, but they didn't make it as big as I was hoping. Still, now you can fit 6 CF cards into this thing.

One thing I noticed from their new design is that the inner card holder is no longer rubber, but a stiff foam type material. From my experience putting the cards into the perfectly formed recesses, I found the foam might eventually wear out. Since this is new to me, I can't say for certain, so I will have to test it out and see. If there's an update to this review, you'll know something is up.

The latch on the newer cases are now VERY DIFFICULT to open. In a way, that's a good thing, because that means your cards will be secure. The seal around the perimeter of the case also keeps out unwanted moisture, so if this falls into the lack closed, it will float and your cards will remain dry. This is great, especially if you're out in the wilderness, in a pond or swamp, or even in a rain-forest taking photos.

Comparing the cases, I see that the new cases are about 10% larger, than the older 4-card version. I will upload some pics for you to see what I mean.

Quality-wise, if you've ever seen the Pelican product testing videos, you'll know that they design these to fall from a great height and survive. These cases are durable.

My only wonder, is whether the latch will eventually become more easy to open or not. Right now I have to use my whole hand on it to open it, whereas the older model only needs one finger.

Still, I highly recommend anyone getting this, because it is well made, built to last and a great value when you consider what it protects (your precious images).
