I own both the Pelican 0940 and the 0945 compact flash cases. The 0945 is much improved over the 0940 for use (although I suspect the 0940 might survive more abuse). Where the 0940 held four cards in either a vertical or horizontal orientation the 0945 makes better use of space and holds 6 cards all in a horizontal orientation, without making the case significantly larger. The other change between the cases is that the rubber inserts of the 0940 have been replaced with a dense foam in the 0945 which does a better job of holding the cards in place.
This case is nothing like the build quality on the 940 case. The 945 and 915 fails on several points.
The latch is impossible to open one handed. And even two handed is difficult. Poor execution. Anyone who says use a key or a coin is just silly, this is not a run and gun case.
Case looks to be of a lesser material and flexes more.
Interior insert is of a lesser material and cut wrong. I had to trim my CF case insert with a razor to have my cards fit correctly. Again not run and gun like the 940 case.
Maybe over time the latch will loosen and be workable, but the insert will not hold up to traffic.
One last note to Pelican, small cases are better some other color than black. That way you can find the case in the dark of a bag or another pelican case.
Another gripe... the 0940 interior is formatted in such a way that I can place the card horizontally or vertically. I use it this way: face down means the card is full. Face up but sideways means the card has been downloaded but needs formatted (deleted), and face up means the card is formatted and ready to go. The 0945 only lets me do face up or face down.
If you're looking for a CF card case for more than four cards, buy this one!
One thing I noticed from their new design is that the inner card holder is no longer rubber, but a stiff foam type material. From my experience putting the cards into the perfectly formed recesses, I found the foam might eventually wear out. Since this is new to me, I can't say for certain, so I will have to test it out and see. If there's an update to this review, you'll know something is up.
The latch on the newer cases are now VERY DIFFICULT to open. In a way, that's a good thing, because that means your cards will be secure. The seal around the perimeter of the case also keeps out unwanted moisture, so if this falls into the lack closed, it will float and your cards will remain dry. This is great, especially if you're out in the wilderness, in a pond or swamp, or even in a rain-forest taking photos.
Comparing the cases, I see that the new cases are about 10% larger, than the older 4-card version. I will upload some pics for you to see what I mean.
Quality-wise, if you've ever seen the Pelican product testing videos, you'll know that they design these to fall from a great height and survive. These cases are durable.
My only wonder, is whether the latch will eventually become more easy to open or not. Right now I have to use my whole hand on it to open it, whereas the older model only needs one finger.
Still, I highly recommend anyone getting this, because it is well made, built to last and a great value when you consider what it protects (your precious images).
