Here are the pros:
With the fully insulated lid w/rubber gasket, bottom, and sides along with its military grade polymers this cooler keeps items cold. Soo cold my drinks often freeze when left in the ice for days on end. This unit sits in the back of my work truck under a black tonneau that gets hot. In 95 plus degree weather ive been able to keep ice for 5 days and by day 6 its just cold water. In 75 degree weather i have had ice for 9 days with slush on day 10. The trick to keeping ice is YOU NEED TO DRAIN WATER EVERY DAY and limit how many cubic inches of air are in the cooler. watery ice helps cool drinks faster but will melt chunk ice at a much quicker rate than without water. Also block ice keeps longer than chip ice. The drain on the side is air tight and drains a completely full cooler of water in under a minute. Easy for cleaning the inside after holding fish or meats for a couple of days. The handles and latches are top notch. great accessories for pelican coolers as well.
Make sure you know what you're buying this cooler for. If you need a fixed cooler for marine fun or a truck bed cooler for refreshments you are GOLDEN. Couldnt ask for better. However If you need a cooler for camping where hiking and portability are needed. you are looking at the wrong unit. This cooler is extremely heavy when empty and ungodly when fully loaded. Can seem quite cumbersome to carry on long hauls. Even walking this unit down a boat dock from your vehicle will have you at a chiropractor the next day!! The other downfall with the pelican design is how small the interior space is. Although mine is quoted at 45 quarts it seems quite small compared to its competitors for interior storage space. the white cooler does get dirty quite fast and takes a ton of scrubbing to clean up. I recommend magic eraser scrub wipes on the white plastic. does wonders.
In summary, Identify what your needs are and what you wish to use the cooler as. It serves a very good purpose for my stationary needs.
Could not be happier with this purchase.
The only reason I reserved one star is because of the configuration of the drain plug. The plastic tether that retains the drain plug cap is on a plastic ring in which the drain is threaded through. The ring is captured between the outside wall of the cooler and an integral flat washer on the drain plug itself. My cap is near impossible to remove now because silt/sand has collected between the washer and cooler body which creates a lot of friction. I thought of using a boat plug, but the ones I had on hand were too big. I used a kayak boat plug which fits nicely. The drain plug is my only con at this point. I am already shopping for a bigger one for deer season.
And now I left the cooler near the tail gate of my truck and forgot that the tailgate was down. I drove off with the gate open and a couple of miles later the cooler fell out at highway speeds. When I recovered it I found the left side latch broken and the drain plug missing. I emailed Pelican customer service on a Saturday and got a reply in an hour or two. They will send a replacement latch and plug and no cost even tho this was due to my careless actions. You can't beat that for customer service.
So it's an unbeatable cooler and they provide great customer service on top of that.
