I was building a setup that could house all eight of my older and "retro" video game systems (FC Twin, Genesis/Sega CD/32X, Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, GameCube and Wii). Everything was ready except for the most-needed part: the A/V selector box. I went with this Pelican product because there were literally no other options available to me...
A) ...that were within my price range.
B) ...that actually HAD 8 separate inputs.
Buyers beware; there are lots of products that claim to have multiple different source inputs, but what they actually feature are multiple different input TYPES for the same source. This was the first product I found that was both affordable and actually performed 100% as advertised, so I'm glad I took the chance on this one. Oh, and once you've got everything set up properly, the image and sound quality is virtually lossless.
My only complaint with the product is that it comes with an AC adapter that has to be plugged in to work properly. At first, I was a little irked about that, seeing as the surge protectors around my entertainment center are already fully loaded as-is (especially since the Genesis setup ALONE requires 3 separate plugs), but once I got everything rearranged I realized that it's a small price to pay considering the convenience.
Oh, one other problem with this product: Pelican apparently doesn't make it anymore. That in itself is a damned shame, since it works fantastically. If you're in the market for something like this, take my advice. Hunt one of these Pelican units down and make it your own. It's a great investment.
If you really need an 8x1 component switch then this is definitely the product for you. I have since done more research and discovered that only 4 consoles need component but can't do HDMI (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, Wii). I found an affordable 4x1 component switch (http://www.amazon.com/RCA-DH4CVS-Digital-Component-Switch/dp/B0015F5HIY/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1395206352&sr=1-6&keywords=4+component+switch) and I feel completely future-proof on that particular type of video output. All the other composite inputs are now running through an 8x1 composite switch (http://www.amazon.com/MT-VIKI-AV-Splitter-Selector-Switch/dp/B00DRGDBTG/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1395206467&sr=1-1&keywords=mt-viki+8+ports+8-in+1-out+av+rca+splitter+selector+switch+adapter+mt-831av).
I thought the Pelican System Selector Pro was going to be my best choice for hooking up lots of consoles but I found out it was confusing (which input on the tv goes with this device?), poorly designed (requires extra parts), and poorly described by marketing.
The front panel features cleverly removable panels, allowing the owner to reclassify each switch according to its function. These panels are also unfortunately made of very cheap plastic, and break easily if removed more than once or twice. Spares are included, but the labels are not interchangeable, which may result in confusion with the very function designed to alleviate it.
At actual retail prices, this device feels far too overpriced for the quality control and materials involved, but it is a more than competent switching device, even supporting S-video, component video, digital audio, and ethernet switching.
The most important thing to note is that this device is marked 'Discontinued' by the manufacturer, Pelican Accessories, and they will no longer repair or replace any parts on these devices.
