From the Author
Writing Pendomus was a wild science fiction ride. Though I have to admit, when Pendomus first landed in my head in 2010, the story always felt more fantasy than sci-fi. I believe that shows when reading the novel. If you're looking for a young adult entry into science fiction, this is a great place to start. I hope you enjoy the first book of the Pendomus Chronicles!
From the Back Cover
Humanity has colonized on a tidally locked planet known as Pendomus, a planet of extremes. Half eternal scorching desert and half perpetual arctic night. Surviving along the temperate band between the two, we've set up home in a complex known as the Helix. Within the Helix lies a highly sophisticated, highly technological society that seems to function solely on humans fulfilling their life's purpose. That purpose is determined and nurtured through a person's natural aptitudes, as read by their daily brain scans. Eating, sleeping, even procreation is handled by professionals. These basic concepts, no longer a part of society's every day norm.
Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem longs to be more than part of the Helix machine. Her life inside is anything but fulfilling. She feels disconnected, and longs to be more than society dictates. Inside, no one socializes, no one interacts in a meaningful way. It's never set right with Runa. She would love nothing more than to reach out to her family, but not even her own mother can show any semblance of love for her. Instead, Runa has found solace in the ancient woods nearby, despite being strictly forbidden.
Runa's life takes an unforeseen turn when she's brutally attacked, and left for dead in those woods near the Helix. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she's immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived. Fueled by a yearning to belong, and an attraction she didn't even know was possible, Runa wants desperately to make a new life. Yet, there's much she doesn't know about herself, about the planet and the forces controlling her from afar.
What she needs are some answers.

Runa, Daughter of Five and heroine of the story, is quite the enigma. Like no other within the Helix, she must find her calling outside of the technology and manipulation that was once her home. She is naturally extremely naïve and innocent to the ways life outside the Helix; her discovery of so many new and wild experiences (hormones, anyone? Her first true bath? Sleep???) is quite entertaining!
Though Runa is meant to fulfill a mysterious prophecy, she isn’t just another pretty girl chasing her destiny; she is given something to truly fight for: love, her family, her new-found home. Runa continues to grow and mature throughout her journey towards discovering her place in the world. By the end, she’s no longer who she once was; now she’s a fighter, a survivor. She can do anything she puts her mind to, and she can do what is right; even if she doesn’t know it yet. Runa is an authentic and refreshing, yet appropriately flawed, heroine; she is wrought with the insecurities of one who has been thrust from a safe (well, “safe”) environment to one filled with the unknown, including a dangerous destiny (as if running away from the Helix to the outdoors isn’t scary enough!).
The other main characters, Runa’s new outdoorsy friends, are written with clearly defined character traits and flaws; you can pick one out of a line up just by reading one line of dialogue! The narration also shifts between Runa and the handsome young man, Traeton. This switch-between is seamless, and allows for a more in-depth look at not only Traeton’s emotions, but the group dynamic as well.
The plot twists are unexpected, and they help tie together elements from the beginning of the story with the last portion; no loose ends here (unless, of course, they are intentional….but that is where the next book comes in!). Speaking of endings, the book doesn’t answer every question, nor should it. We are left with Runa taking the next step on her journey; where will it take her? What must she do? What will happen to her friends? I will be reading book two to find out, and so should you!
I don't want to spoil any of the joys you'll get from your own reading and truth be told, not everyone will enjoy this book. But like life on Pendomus, and like Runa the best things to happen in life are not always by a continuation of the events you like but by stepping forth into the parts that can make you uneasy, even downright unpleasant but as long as you can keep your self centered, find that way to keep moving further, even a single step at a time then you will grow. I'm rambling on!
Do yourself a favor if you love science fiction, with a twist of fantasy and a little romance to boot! Than you'll like, maybe even fall in love eight book one of the Pendomus Cycle!!
