5.0 out of 5 stars Nice smooth playback, 3 USB ports, and so far no serious quirks!
By primehalo on July 28, 2019
Well over 10 years ago I transferred all of our DVDs to an external hard drive and have been using streaming media players to watch them ever since. I have gone through a ton of them, all different brands and configurations, and even wrote really long reviews for some of them. I landed on Android Boxes several years ago which I've been sticking with as they've been working pretty well. I've probably used around five different Android boxes and every single one has its quirks. These usually show up within the first few days of use. For instance, the one in our living room will randomly just stop playing a video at which point we have to pick up the remote and push play again. For the one in our bedroom the Google Play store randomly crashes with a super-loud sound effect. The solution for that was to disable the play store.

I mention all that because I have been using this current Android box for about 10 days now and the only quirk that happened was Kodi locking up when I was previewing a digital clock screensaver add-on. The actual screensaver worked, only the preview of it locked up Kodi. Other than that, this player has been working well. I've watched several movies and several TV show episodes and never had a problem. I have it plugged in via network cable rather than using Wi-Fi so I didn't really get to test out the Wi-Fi, but with the cable playback is clear and smooth, no stuttering or buffering. The great thing about Android boxes is that they aren't limited to just local streaming, you can stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, or any other streaming app out there on the Google Play store. I tried it with Amazon Prime and it worked great.

This is the first Android box I've gotten that has three USB ports. All the others only had two, and I always use one for the USB receiver to an air mouse. The remotes that come with these boxes are decent but they are difficult to move the mouse cursor because you have to use the directional buttons. I highly recommend getting either an air mouse remote or a remote with a touch pad. This is also the first Android box I've gotten that has Android 9, though so far I haven't noticed much of a difference from Android 8. Kodi 18 has built in support for gaming which I thought I might get into at some point, so I made sure this box has Bluetooth. I'm sure there are controllers that use USB receivers but who wants to use up one of the valuable USB ports on that when Bluetooth is available?

If you've never used one of these before, don't be intimidated. It's very easy to set up. Just plug in the power cable, connect it to your TV via the included HDMI cable, and either plug in a network cable or go into the settings and enter your Wi-Fi information. That's all there is to it! It very small in size compared to DVD players and cable boxes which means it can fit just about anywhere as long as it has adequate ventilation. There are no fans inside so it's completely quiet but that means it needs to have good air flow around it. The first couple Android boxes we got would overheat when first indexing our video library so I had to put a fan next to it until it finished, but that hasn't happened for the last few.

Navigating with the included remote works fine as long as you're just using the home screen and Kodi because those are designed to work with a standard remote, but for apps that are designed to work with touch screens you'll want to get an upgraded remote. I mentioned this earlier but want to mention it again because you'll definitely want to get one if you're going to be using Amazon Prime or Netflix or almost any other app. It makes moving the cursor and typing in text so much easier.

My first reviews for these types of streaming media players were really long so I'm going to try to keep this short and end it here. If you're new to Android boxes this is a great one to start with, especially since it has built-in 5G Wi-Fi for those of you that don't have a network cable nearby and 3 USB ports so you can attach an upgraded remote and a couple external hard drives.

I hope you found my review helpful, please let me know in the comments if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement. Thanks a bunch!

5.0 out of 5 stars An OUTSTANDING Android Box! Wow!!
By Thom Bone on December 15, 2019
Is this the fastest, most loaded with bells and whistles Android box out there? Of course not; if you want you can spend a fortune on these but I am here to tell you that if you do you will NOT get much more You really need to read this review because I am going to explain to you why this is the best balance between features, power and price out there right now. I have been using these boxes since the very first ones came out with Android 4 on them. I think one even had Gingerbread (Android version 2.2) But this box, for the price? It is AMAZING.

I'll elaborate. Unlike literally every other Android box that I have ever tried, this box has literally NO shortcuts in design that I can find, no bottlenecks, no cheap parts backing up the one "selling point" quality part (like most of the others).

Through and through, this box delivers. So, what's not to like?

I will now list only some of the many great features from this box that you can have while staying at this price point:

--Android 9.0 Pie with OTA updates.
--a REMOVABLE external antenna (so that you can upgrade if you want--but for me I don't need to and you probably won't either. The signal strength for me is great through three walls even, great thorough as well from my FIOS, but it's nice to know that the option is there). And the 5G option is great! It's very fast and has good range.
--HARDWARE, native H265 decoding (very important as many providers are switching to it). and if you haven't heard, Adobe is going to stop supporting Flash completely, soon. It is going the way of the Dodo.
--a USB 3.0 port that supports external hard drives (even SSD). I plugged my 4GB external into it and it was recognized, no problem. Just experiment with file systems until you find the right one if you want to go big.
--TWO USB 2.0 ports. Great for mice, keyboards, wireless devices, USB thumb drives, whatever. Fully OTG as well, so this box can see anything that Android normally could see. AND I tried a USB 2.0 hub in one of the ports and it WORKS. Brilliant!
--4GB of RAM. MORE than enough since we're usually running only one demanding app at a time on these things anyway.
--32GB storage (my version but you can get 64GB for a bit more) which is more than enough since I can plug things into it anyway, which leads me to:
--A MicroSD port. I plugged a 512GB card that I have into it to test it and it came up just fine. So storage will never be a problem for the life of this box, I just know it.
--4K capabilities and in my testing, flawless. With a good stream (some streams are better than others and it's not this box's fault), the box handles it beautifully.
--Good Play Store (well, it's nice to have but....) with the option to install Aptoid if you want (and I truly recommend it over Google Play but I like to live dangerously when it comes to my toys).
--The ability to install anything we like on this box without restrictions. This is important because it can handle games just as well as video, I have found. This box has some real power! I like FInal Fantasy Record Keeper, for example and it plays perfectly.
--The remote is better than most stock remotes that come with other boxes that I have tried. Is it the end-all-be-all of remotes? Of course not, but it gets the job done. I always go wireless keyboard and mouse with these devices anyway and never use the remote. But as far as remotes go, it's better than most, like I said. AND: BLUETOOTH! I don't have to use the USB ports for dongles for said wireless keyboards and mice!
--It bears repeating: BLUETOOTH! And version 5 no less. I have connected my headphones, my ear buds, my phone, my keyboard and mouse (Logitech) to this AND a bluetooth speaker for testing and had zero issues. So nice!
--Did I mention there is a lot of value here for this price point when it comes to these boxes?
--The Allwinner H6 (Specs: Allwinner H6. CPU: quad-core ARM Cortex-A53, up to 1.8GHz and the GPU is a Mali-T720 which can handle plenty) is a great SoC (means System On a Chip). Again, a great value.
--The IR receiver/transmitter is huge. The remote with a more than depleted battery works well at range (like even 20 feet).
--Developer mode has not been gimped in any way (this is important if you are an advanced user).
--I can go on and on but it is time to have some more fun with this box!

Yes, seriously, I love this box that much. I am so happy that I purchased it and plan to enjoy the living you-know-what out of it.

One thing I cannot comment on yet because I have not found the answer one way or another but I am not sure yet if this box is root-able. IF it can be rooted (with Magisk or whatever) and you know for sure, please post a comment to this review with that information? I'd be most grateful!

And finally? There is SO MUCH great free content out there that we don't have to do anything sneaky with these boxes now. There simply is no need. Great content can be had for free that is more than enough. We CAN have our Android box and support the content creators by not ripping them off! Try Pluto, Xumo, Shout Factory TV, the PBS app, CBS All-Access (they have a free version with commercials as do the other major networks), Tubi TV and so much more.

Have fun, enjoy and if you don't have an Android box yet? This is the one to get. It's the PERFECT low-headache starter box. And if you're looking for an upgrade that is real bang for your buck without spending a fortune? You found the right box. Truly.

I cannot recommend it enough and my passion for this device is real. I absolutely LOVE IT. You will too.

HUGELY AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 5+ STARS!
