Why do some people hate the smell, or find it doesn't work so well for them?
Let me just state the obvious, it's due to chemistry, and how each person perceives the smell. What's sweet to some, may stink to the person next to them.
There are many variables to take into account. To name some of those: what are the items being washed made of, what's on the items we are washing, the wash water's chemistry, our body product(s) chemistry(s), the chemistry of our own body odors (which vary depending on many factors -- what we put in them, what we put on them, what we're exposed to, etc.). Just about everything will react chemically with anything else it comes in contact with.
Water looks, tastes and smells different because it IS different, depending on where it comes from. Our wash water is generally not PURE H2O. There are many other things in all water sources (except PURE water made in a lab). I'm talking about minerals, particulates, biological forms, and other chemicals. Even most filtered water isn't PURE. So, people will notice a different smell or have a different reaction from combining any thing, really. Therefore, for some, the smell of their clothing might be offensive after washing with this, while for others, it's neutral.
It may work marginally better than regular detergent at fighting sports clothing odors, but it is nowhere near as good as Win. It took me a few weeks to realize that it wasn't really working very well, as clothes came out of the wash progressively less and less fresh, but now that I've finally identified the problem, I'm going back to Win.
I'm not even going to finish off the rest of the Sport Wash bottle - it's that ineffective.

Workout clothes still smelled funky post-exercise, even after 2 wash cycles. The detergent also has an unpleasant, formaldehyde-like smell; however, it is faint.Published 11 months ago by Catherine F. Razzook
Very expensive for the size bottle. When I got it I washed all of my running clothes in it hoping they would be refreshed. I think it actually made my clothes smell worse. Read morePublished 13 months ago by MajesticGirl

This seems to get a lot of good reviews, and maybe it's just me, or I got a bad bottle, but this product stinks out of the bottle, and doesn't make workout clothes smell good. Read morePublished 23 months ago by sciencenerd

This stuff works. We use it on biking and running clothes with front loader
on easy cycle. It doesn't hurt the gear.
