Zookeeper Madigan Amos loves her position at the Avery Zoo, no matter long hours, heat, dirt, and parents who don't supervise their children. Madi frequently comes up with creative ideas to benefit the animals, but other zookeepers sometimes don't see the point. She also draws a zoo comic she publishes online.
Zoo life isn't always smooth. Animal rights protesters march and complain. A zookeeper working late was assaulted. Now the aquatic animals keeper is found dead, likely murdered. The elderly zoo owner may be in cahoots with a mysterious new construction worker. And Madi' s curiosity and determination to protect the zoo's population may be leading this devoted zookeeper straight into danger all her own. First in a series from prolific author Ruby Loren.
Saturday did not start out well for Madi, keeper at the Avery Zoo. The
regular keeper for the penguins was late, so those duties were temporarily
added to hers. Until she found his body in the penguin pool. And that's
just the beginning of this well crafted mystery puzzle full of twists,
turns, and too many suspects for Madi to be sure of, including a protest
group who have been causing trouble for a while now. There are more
incidents, interpersonnel conflicts, and a real surprise ending. Don't
miss this one!
This is where Madigan Amos works as
a Zookeeper. She is a dedicated, hard
working, problem solving, very realistic
and well created character.
Madigan will take the reader with her
into the zoo workings. She will introduce
various animals, their environment,
eating habits plus share incidents that
happen inside the Avery Zoo.
I enjoyed learning about the uniqueness
of the various jobs involved while
working a zoo.
Madigan finds the penguin zookeeper
dead in the bottom of the penguin's pool
along with a sledgehammer.
Was it an accident or murder?
Madigan sets out to uncover the truth.
The story presents a tangled web of clues
with uncovered lies and secrets revealed.
There is an animal activist protest, strange
volunteers, a suspicious construction worker,
animals escaping their habitat adding humor
and a touch of romance to the mystery.
The characters were well developed, realistic,
and very interesting adding flavor to the story.
The tension was thick with plenty of suspense,
chills and thrills with unexpected twists.
A very entertaining read.
I bought the book because the plot intrigued me. The reviews were very high and this is the type of book I like to just relax and read. Remember, this is a murder mystery -- the suspense and action are all in there at The Avery Zoo! I'll have to check the rest out -- I really do think this series is one I will love!
Between animal activist using vandalism and being suspected of worse, doing everything they can to try and close down the zoo, a construction crew that there may be more to than meets the eye, and Madigan's observations of unusual and suspicious habits from several members of the staff and volunteers. There's very few people left that Madigan does not suspect.
Ruby Loren wrote a fun mystery that had solid characters and a good plot lines. The only downside was for the length of the story, there were too many subplots to be carried out smoothly. This was an enjoyable story and I plan to get the future stories when released.
