The quality of the manufacturing isn't ideal, and the product can certainly harm your fish. The harm would come from the areas around where the door and window openings are formed into the body, as well as the rim around the bottom... In all those areas, the material seems to have been cut with a hot knife or some other type of thermal cutting tool, sharp plastic slag and edges on the interior where fish (especially if they have flowing fins like Bettas or goldfish) can harm themselves either by shredding the fins or damaging scales.....
I used fine sandpaper and steelwool to polish the sharp edges, and after a through cleaning placed the house into my tank.
the house looks good in the tank with a sand bottom.... but, there will be some modification you will have to do since this product is obviously mass produced with little attention to final quality.
This is absolutely an adorable product, and my little beta, Autry, loved to hang out inside.
The build quality, however, is abysmal. Before I got the product, other reviews pointed out that there were rough edges, and those rough edges should be sanded down before putting the ornament in the tank, so that's exactly what I did. The ornament was in the tank for about two weeks until one day, while cleaning, I noticed that the paint was dissolving and becoming severely discolored. I ran my finger across the paint, and it smudged incredibly easily, and the paint remained on my finger.
After I noticed this, I did a full water change. I scrubbed the tank and all other accessories that were in the tank, and took all the necessary steps to make sure any toxins released by the paint were no longer present. Since this happened, I noticed Autry was experiencing fin rot. I started using a fin rot cure, but that didn't seems to help at all, and the condition was getting progressively worse.
Sadly, this morning Autry passed away. I'm not sure of the exact cause, but I'm also not ruling out the possibility of this item making Autry ill due the dissolved paint in the water.
Either way, be very cautious of this product.
