Every once in a while I run across a book that is a perfect “escape read or mini vacation” for moms. Penniless Hearts by Eve Gaal is a wonderful happily ever after, charming, and unique romance. Imagine a bit of comedy, romance and magic on the Hawaiian Islands. Your child will see you laughing and enjoying yourself, as you read.
The protagonist, Penny a graphic artist, is looking for adventure and romance. She abandons her responsibilities and dashes off to Hawaii with a bad boy, not bad on the eyes, full of life, pilot. Leaving her dad, boyfriend and coworkers- all who are demanding-wondering what happened to her and trying to track her down. Meanwhile her fast paced adventure begins… Penny’s dashing pilot boyfriend turns out to be married, she loses all her money, gets accidentally involved with a drug gang, and is left on a forbidden island mistaken for a goddess,--not just any goddess, but Pele-- all hilarious situations. However, this fast-paced romp has depth as Penny finds that not all people are exactly whom they claim to be. Also, the very human discovery that her own yearnings for something out the ordinary come with a price tag. The surprise ending will satisfy the most romantic reader. It's a fun read.
An adventure with twists and turns the reader will never forget. Penniless Hearts is a wonderful novel, and Eve Gaal’s imagination seems to know no end. You will look forward to her next piece of written work. Your child will watch you truly enjoy reading.

That's when all the fun begins. Unfortunately for Penny, Dan is married and his wife surprises him at the hotel. Penniless Hearts has many characters and Author Eve Gaal does a magical job of intimately weaving everyone to each other. I was very impressed and surprised each time a character linked to another. This is not just a romance; there's intrigue and humor that is also woven into the story.
The author does an exceptional job with descriptions of both people and places, so readers can clearly understand this book and picture themselves right there in the midst of all the action. I loved the independent nature of Penny, and no matter what she did, she seemed to be headed for trouble at each turn.
In the end, Penny discovers her true self and her true love through a series of dreams and by an encounter with an artist who had painted the very likeness of her from Hawaiian legends without even knowing Penny really existed.
The best part for me is that John never gives up searching for Penny, including flying to Hawaii with her father. It's a love any woman would wish for, but do Penny and John end up together, or does Penny finally find that man that her heart aches for?
There is so much going on in this book and I enjoyed every chapter and who was involved in what. There are some surprises too which only added to the genius of the author and her exceptional plots. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, intrigue, and humor. I loved reading this novel and found it difficult to set it down.
I know this story will stick with me for a long time and I certainly hope this author plans on writing more books. I look forward to reading her next story.
