As a result, I needed to work harder to emotionally identify with the characters. My favourite was Tina, the domineering boss. Her over-the-top personality fitted perfectly the over-the-top themes of this story.
This book also has some humour. Also, it's nice to see a man (John) who is decent, trusting, honest, and extremely patient, so that he'll wait years and be like best friends with the woman he loves. We need more of these men.
The descriptions of Hawaii were interesting too.
I must begin with the fact that is out of my genre of preference (science fiction) and the first few pages had me wondering what I'd gotten myself into, committing to read a book I wasn't sure I'd be interested in, in the first place.
That said, I found Penniless Hearts completely engaging! As the story unfolded, all of the characters (whether major or minor) were completely fleshed out to the point where I felt I knew them personally, cheering for some, laughing and smirking at others. I think my favorite is Penny, as I can easily identify with her quirky personality.
It may not bother you, but I must say, there is one rather explicit, steamy scene that I finally skimmed over. Just me. Not my thing.
Aside from that, I found the story full of excitement, adventure, love interests, good character development, and scenes shifting effortlessly from one place or time to another, even as characters jumped from California to various spots on the Hawaiian Islands. I loved Eve's descriptive phrases, like "crawled into memories"..."drawing his name out like saltwater taffy..."
Carve out some time, pull up a seat with Mai Tai in hand and travel to Hawaii through this love adventure! Aloha!
Penny: She's the star of this book and is bored with her life, her job, and her boyfriend. So she takes off to Hawaii with Captain Dan Losegg, an airline pilot. She's a gal who wants some adventure, romance, and to forget about the boring everyday stuff at home. Will Penny get the adventure she bargained for or something more?
Tina: She is Penny's boss at the Globe. The woman appears to be a bi-polar bully. But ends up leading a wild goose chase to find her subordinate. According to her astro-chart she has a mission to play cupid. Who will Cupid capture?
John: He's Penny's boyfriend. He's lovable, loyal, and loves Penny with all his heart. But hey! He got comfy until he went to Penny's office to take her to lunch and bumped into Tina. Not long after that, he finds himself on a plane to Hawaii to find Penny. But will he be too late?
Carl: He's Penny's father, a retired Vet, and someone who relies on Penny to keep his daily routine going. Carl, too, ends up on the plane to Hawaii to find Penny. All the while, reminding John that he screwed up in not asking his daughter to marry him. Will he ever have grandchildren?
Captain Dan Losegg: He is the airline pilot who coaxes Penny to fly away with him to Hawaii. He is your classic shallow womanizer with a few surprises in his pants and a lot of baggage. Like Operation Penny. Will he even get to first base with Penny?
Darin: He is Tina's boyfriend who owns a big car dealership in Hawaii. He's got plenty of issues himself. Like being unfaithful to Tina and having a whole other business life besides cars. Will he get caught?
The ending was wonderful. That's all I will say, other than, I would read this again. It's an endearing read.
