Our most-advanced seed formulated for areas of your yard with dense shade or very little sun. Specifically formulated to outperform other shade mixes.
Not all grass seed is created equal. Pennington has spent years cultivating the most technologically advanced seed on the market, and we’re proud of the results. Pennington Smart Seed is a purebred, drought-resistant, environmentally conscious seed that saves up to 30% more water year after year versus ordinary grass seed – brought to you by the people who care about your grass as much as you do. Each bag of Smart Seed includes our exclusive Penkote technology, which improves seedling success for healthier plants and ensures better plant growth. Smart Seed with MYCO Advantage replenishes beneficial microorganisms, which help grass grow deep, dense roots – the way nature intended. As with all of our bags of seed, Smart Seed is guaranteed to grow and protected by the Pennington Guarantee.
Planting & Growing Instructions:
New Seeding - Prepare the soil by tilling to a depth of 4-6 inches. Conduct a soil test to be sure your soil has the proper nutrients it needs for a healthy lawn. Apply fertilizer and soil amendments, such as lime or gypsum, at the recommended rates. If you are unable to conduct a soil test, apply a complete lawn fertilizer according to the recommended rates on the packages. Work fertilizer or soil amendments evenly into the soil, then rake the soil surface smooth to give the seed an ideal bed in which to establish healthy roots. Sow the grass seed by evenly spreading according to the recommended seeding rates. Rake, harrow, or otherwise work the seed into the soil ⅛"" deep. Keep the area well watered until the seeds germinate and the seedlings have grown sufficiently to establish a lawn, then water as needed.
Overseeding or Re-Seeding - Before overseeding, it is important to prepare the soil. Conduct a soil test to be sure your lawn has the proper balance of nutrients. Fertilize and add soil amendments if needed. Mow or clip the existing grass as closely as possible. Remove clippings and rake, harrow lightly, or aerate the soil where there is existing lawn. This will allow the new seed to make contact with the soil. Sow the seed and gently rake to cover. Keep the lawn moist until seedlings are established, then water as needed.
Undesirable Lawns - Rid your lawn of undesirable grasses following the steps below so that you can establish a desirable lawn:
-During any growing season, spray the established undesirable turf with a non-selective herbicide labeled for lawn use. Follow the directions on the label.
- After the lawn turns brown, continue with your seeding program as outlined above. Be sure to start with a soil test or a soil amendment, such as fertilizer.
Improving Bare Spots - Mow your lawn closely, then remove leaves, dead grass, etc. Rake, harrow lightly, or aerate the bare spots to prepare the seedbed. Conduct a soil test to be sure the soil has the proper balance of nutrients. Fertilize and add soil amendments if needed.

I didn't do any ground prep. I sprinkled the seed all over, then sprinkled peat moss all over on top of the seed. Watered it daily, and had cute little baby grass sprouts in a week! It is growing literally EVERYWHERE that I sprinkled the seed! I highly recommend using peat moss to cover the seed. I notice a lot more sprouts in the areas that ended up with more of the peat moss, although I do still see some growing on the bare ground.
I plan on buying more very soon to finish seeding the whole yard. Thank you for making such a great product!!!
My dog obliterated my lawn, now he's banned. This stuff is reclaiming what was once barren. You'll need more than the recommended amount though so buy one extra bag.
keeping it moist. I have one spot this seed was intended for, too much shade that the bluegrass would not stay alive because it is near a tree. I had to put down grass seed 6 times and this product just doesn't cut it.
