The lists making up this remarkable work try to identify German emigrants in their homeland and in Pennsylvania. Thus they are cited with reference to manumission records, parish registers, passports, and other papers of German and Swiss provenance, and noted again, where possible, with reference to an equivalent range of Pennsylvania source materials, notably church records, wills, and tax lists. The materials antedating immigration often indicate causes, dates of emigration, the emigrant's occupation, his dates of birth and marriage, place of birth and residence, and names of family members, sometimes with lines of descent for several generations.

I already had the old PA German Folklore Society edition with the Gruber lists from Wurtemberg. But that book was not indexed and to use it, I had to flip through it each time. This book has these lists and several others, fully indexed, and in paper back. References are made to records in Germany and in Pennsylvania. For those interested in immigrants from this time period, it's a bargain (in paperback form!).

This is an awesome book! But only if you have ancestors from Wuerttemberg, County of Wertheim, or Zweibruecken in the Palatinate, Germany, or the Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. So, if you know your ancestors are from, say, Hesse, this book would not include them!

Otherwise, this is a valuable book for those looking for ancestors who left Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania! There are very detailed records. Iin many searches, one may only see the men listed as passengers, in this book, the number of children and if that man has a wife is listed. Which can be helpful when looking for marriage records!!
