Tony Curtis introduces this classic comedy/tear-jerker starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Romance is in the air when record store assistant Julie (Dunne) falls for feckless reporter Roger (Grant). He is offered a job in Tokyo, but marries Julie before he leaves, promising to send for her once his finances are secure. When she eventually arrives, however, it is left to her to clear his debts. Happier times seem to be ahead when Julie becomes pregnant and they decide to return to America, but tragedy lurks just around the corner.

The most important aspect of this release is the print. On VHS and even on TV, Penny Serenade has been a movie only previously available as a public domain print. Some releases being sub-par in my view. This version released by Olive Films however, is supposed to be digitally remastered. Well if it is, it is not on the level of Warner Brothers' release of "Casablanca", nevertheless despite this fact, Penny Serenade is quite clear and crisp. The contrast balances have never been better and the black white images are rock solid.
Perhaps access to the original negative was not available. Still, 4 stars for the quality of the print. One star is deducted for the presentation of the menu which is pretty bare bones in the extremous. No trailer, no lobby card display which are the kind of things I like to be included in film releases of this era.
However, the films the thing and if you are considering to buy this version then I implore you to do so. You won't regret it. It is up to the date of this review, the best print you will find anywhere. Olive Films have done a very fine job
The movie opens with the end of the marriage. She finds their album of records they have bought through the years and as she plays each one she is taken back on the journey of their lives together. It is an incredible story of love, loss, tragedy and hope told in an incredible way that should put it on many people's list of movie favorites.
Refreshing to watch a movie that addresses the trials of life with dignity. Movie is slow getting to the heart of the story. This couple struggles with tragic realities of life. There are no guarantees in life, and marriage is full of unforeseen occurrence. A younger audience might not appreciate this movie because it moves slow. This movie, though not a comedy, made me smile a few times and cry more than once. Cary Grant is handsome as always.
Ugh, and I've just missed the time frame for being able to return it.
Anyway, I prefer Grant in his funny role :) I just love his fast speaking funny quips (like in "his girl Friday", i believe that's the name-&that's the film I fell in love with Grant as an actor)
Like I said, I enjoy his more comedic roles BUT i enjoyed watching him in this drama. I was not initially in the mood for a serious-drama flick when I chose to watch but was bored, and although many parts of film are not super serious but rather showing a couple falling in love, I still enjoyed and glad I watched.
