I have read quite a few commentaries on the Epistles of John, but Chris Thomas for me offered unique insight. He basically sees 1 John as a supplement to the Gospel of John that corrects any misunderstandings that the community had concerning what was said in the Gospel. One thing Thomas does very well is stay consistent with this methodology. Whereas, many commentaries spend much time speculating about the opponents that John takes on as being Gnostics or antinomians, Thomas does not allow these speculations to influence much in his interpretation of the text. The commentary is written in an easy to read format, but is very scholarly at the same time. This commentary series has a reflection and response sections that causes the reader to interact with what he or she has read in the text.
Chris uses a Chiastic structure that looks like this for 1 John
A Prologue: Eternal life 1:1-1:4
B Making Him a Liar (Walking) 1:8-2:2
C New Commandment (Love) 2:3-2:17
D Antichrists 2:18-2:27
E Confidence (Do Not Sin) 2:28-3:10
F Love One Another 3:11-3:17
E1 Confidence (Keep the Commands) 3:18-3:23
D1 Antichrists 4:1-4:6
C1 God's Love and Ours 4:7-5:5
B1 Making Him a Liar (Testimony) 5:6-5:12
A1 Concluding Remarks: Eternal Life 5:13-5:21
Chris shows how the Epistle works into the central message of love one another, and then works back out again. I would recommend this commentary to everyone. It is excellent scholarship with great insight for personal application. Looking forward to his next commentary.
