The grip is decent but it isn't thick enough. I have short fingers and that means that thinner items tend to cause my hands to cramp up with extended use. This is not a minus, just a personal issue I wanted to comment on since most pencils are around this thickness.
My main problem would be with the pocket clip/retractor mechanism. I can tell that this part is fragile and will render the pencil useless if you were to actually use it as a pocket clip for any length of time. The moment it gets hung on anything or bends a little, it will fail and the pencil will be useless. I don't use mine like that, but it's just something I noticed. I would recommend to never use the clip for anything but retracting the tip.
Overall I can't recommend anything else over this because the tip can be retrracted into the pencil, which is not a common feature. Every other pencil I've owned has failed due to the tip being slightly bent from storage, a condition which causes the lead to either break or bind up when extending. The other problem I've had with other pencils was that the lead 'clamp' in other devices wore out and the lead would simply slide back into the pencil when pressure was applied, such as during writing -- time will tell on that issue with this pencil.
So one day I was price matching these mechanical pencils I had just bought (because I couldn't believe they were so cheap! Got them at Pearl, but price went up now, booo...) and I saw that there was a .4mm sized Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil! And it was green! My favorite color! So I placed the order (not sold here in the U.S. I guess, came from Japan) and got this one. And it is amazing! I agree with the other comment, it's as tough as a.5mm and fine like a .3mm
I had to have this one just to finish the collection and I'm glad I bought it!
It was $10.77 sold on amazon by Santa Trading Japan (GBI). It arrived 2 weeks earlier than the earliest expected delivery date.
Side note: I'm always skeptical about products like this coming from overseas, but it is exactly like my other Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencils (other than the lead size and color).
I love my Pentel Graph Gear.
