Disclaimer: The first two pencils were lost when I got robbed a while ago and when I lost it at the university somewhere.
The mechanics of this pencil is very precise and the lead never skips back. You can even use a second lead to push the first forward therefore using every lead until the very end of it without any problems. The tip of this pencil retracts, so you can safely store it in your bag without fear of bending the tip and losing your pencil over a dumb mistake.
The rubber+textured aluminum grip is very comfortable and allows a very soft grip without letting the pencil go. for designers in general: the pencil has a lead type selector that you can use to distinguish between pencils with different lead types - I particularly don't use it as I only have one that I use for writing and doing math.
As anyone would expect, due to the very precise mechanics, if you drop it on the floor tip down, it will likely bend and your leads are more likely to get stuck and annoy you over time (happened to the first, that got lost. The last one is still in pristine condition, thankfully).
As the pencil body is all on aluminum, the pencil feels a little heavier than the graph gear 600. It is still light enough to be comfortable, and the heavier touch gives some character to it, which I enjoy.
In my opinion, you won't be disappointed in getting this pencil by any aspect of it. It's very stylish and outstanding.
When it comes to any arsenal of art supplies one of the key components is always a pencil, and all though there are many options for mechanical pencils, never have I been more pleased with one.
The first thing that immediately stood out for me was the quality of the pencils entire body. Not just with the quality of the metal body, but the weight is absolutely fantastic. Although a little on the heavier side, once you become adjusted the weight will become one of your best friends for a variety of movements.
Other fantastic qualities that I did not anticipate for the pencil include:
The grip casing that can be rotated in order for you to know what gradient of graphite you have loaded
( HB, H, B, 2B, 2H, )
When the Clip is pressed down on the lead sleeve is retracted back within the body, thus protecting the delicate component.
After buying my first one (the graphgear 1000 0.5 ) , I immediately purchased the .4 and .3 variant of the graphgear 1000. So simply put, if you are an artist or just someone who needs a high quality mechanical pencil do not hesitate to at least try out the graphgear 1000
So one day I was price matching these mechanical pencils I had just bought (because I couldn't believe they were so cheap! Got them at Pearl, but price went up now, booo...) and I saw that there was a .4mm sized Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil! And it was green! My favorite color! So I placed the order (not sold here in the U.S. I guess, came from Japan) and got this one. And it is amazing! I agree with the other comment, it's as tough as a.5mm and fine like a .3mm
I had to have this one just to finish the collection and I'm glad I bought it!
It was $10.77 sold on amazon by Santa Trading Japan (GBI). It arrived 2 weeks earlier than the earliest expected delivery date.
Side note: I'm always skeptical about products like this coming from overseas, but it is exactly like my other Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencils (other than the lead size and color).
I’m not a big fan of the yellow accents, but that’s not a dealbreaker at all. The yellow parts of the pencil are rough to the touch and allow for a good grip. The various sizes of the Pentel Graph Gear 1000 are my favorite drawing and writing mechanical pencils and they’re a good price.
I like very much that when you press the clip to put the pencil in your pocket, the front mechanism retracts to prevent puncturing your clothes or get the tip overly stressed.
