In some respects, Wise's book is a photographic road trip across America. Most of the pix were taken at various festivals or concerts like the Mariposa Festival, Big Sur Festival, National Folk Festival, Ann Arbor Blues Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, etc. Pix of 'name' musicians like Jim Croce, Tod Rundgren, Ray Charles, Frank Zappa, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Taj Mahal, John Hartford, David Johansen, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Richie Havens, Charlie Mingus, 'Doc' Watson, Tom Paxton, and Earl Scruggs are intermixed with not-so-well-known musicians such as Jaco Pastorius, Kenny Kosek, Booker White, Roosevelt Sykes and Josef Zawinul.
Wise has a wonderful eye for imagery. Many of the pix capture the subject in a casual, laid-back manner entirely without artifice. His affection for his subjects is palpable, Wise referring to the various men and women as "good friends...whose music, tall tales and humor (the reader) would surely treasure and enjoy." The combination of affectionate images and insightful commentary produces a marvelous read.
In short, music fans, especially those of the baby boomer group, will enjoy this magical (photographic) mystery tour through the American music scene of the sixties and seventies. Recommended.
