Product Description

This Atlas 8 inch brass pepper mill is hand made in Greece using the same methods used for the past 300 years with durable all metal bodies and a tool steel grinding mechanism built to last. Atlas mills are the origin of the phrase "pepper grinder", since these mills actually grind the pepper. Common pepper mills only smash the peppercorns, which severely limits the flavor release. The Atlas mill is a unique piece of European tradition that is functionally the best in the world!

My wife and I have always struggled with poor quality pepper mills because we couldn't come to grips with spending this much money on something so simple. I finally decided enough was enough and started browsing Amazon for a worthy candidate. After reading the reviews, I decided to give this one a spin (oops - sorry about that).

Mind you, I had very high expectations after reading the reviews and viewing the picture. So when it arrived, it had to impress - and it did. In fact, it far exceeded my lofty expectations. One of the reviewers said it was built like a tank. That's no exaggeration. Cockroaches and these grinders will be the only things left if there's nuclear war. The grinding mechanism feels sure and solid when you turn it, and the quality and quantity of the grind is superb. I doubt that I could be happier with my purchase.

Update 2-15-11: After about a year of use, the grind quantity became inconsistent. I discovered one of the brass screws on the outer body (there are two - one of them can be seen in the picture) that holds the grind mechanism in place, had become loose. Tightening it solved the problem. Just an FYI for anyone with the same issue.

This is a beautiful pepper grinder that is built solidly. It is simple to operate, to disassemble, and to clean. It also produces a large quantity of pepper with minimal effort.

The only complaint I can muster, granted it is a substantial one, is that the range of coarseness or fineness is very small. Indeed, if one were to ask me to discern the difference between the product of the coarsest setting and the finest setting I would be hard pressed to provide and answer; they are both very fine. I liken the difference to that of powdered sugar and baking soda. I even went through lengths to ensure my grinder was not faulty, and indeed nothing was wrong with it.

The pepper mill is excellent for fine pepper; however its extreme lack of versatility especially coupled with the price makes this product worthy of only 3 stars.

We were given our first brass pepper mill (the 8" open bottom version) as a wedding present twenty years ago - they were a bit more exotic back then and harder to find. It has been in continuous service on our dinner table since them. It is indestructible. The oils from the peppercorns keep it lubricated. It is adjustable.

My only complaint is that it is slightly (only slightly) awkward grinding pepper into a small bowl for cooking. The rotation of the handle rotates the bottom slightly so you have to hold it tightly in place if you are grinding several tablespoons of pepper into a small bowl.

Our solution was to pick up the larger (11") version with the bottom cup to catch the pepper. The second one stays in the kitchen.

We have been giving these pepper grinders as wedding presents ourselves - it is I gift I'm certain they'll use for many, many years!

This is a great pepper mill but it does suffer from the problem that many other reviewers have commented on: an inability to adjust it for anything other than a fine grind. The screw on the bottom does allow for some adjustment, but even at the coarsest setting it is still a pretty fine particle size. After owning it for 3 months, and marveling at how quickly (and finely) it grinds, I finally decided to disassemble it to see if I could solve the problem. There is a fix; it's fairly easy for a do-it-your-selfer, but some may fine it to be beyond their skill level.

Once it's disassembled it's easy to see what the problem is: not enough clearance between the grinder cone and the outer shell. Even with the screw completely removed, the grinder cone can't drop down far enough in the housing to allow large particles to drop through. The fix is to remove some material from the bottom of the grinder cone, thus allowing it to ride lower in the housing. Once the unit is disassembled I simply removed a millimeter or so off the bottom of the grinder cone with a rotary power sander fitted with an abrasive wheel (a metal file would work too but would take longer). Now it works like a champ and offers a full range of grind, from fine to coarse.

Disassembly is easy, there are two brass screws on the outside, that once removed, allow the entire grinder assembly to drop out of the brass shell. After that, remove the adjustment screw and carefully tap out the keyed bar out of the grinder housing. Once that's done, the grinder cone slides right out and is available for modification.

With the fix, I give it 5 stars. Without the fix it's still a wonderful pepper mill, especially if you like finely ground pepper, but I'd only give it 4 stars.

This was purchased as a possible replacement for my tall Unicorn Magnum
pepper mill which has poor fine grind setting and comes out of grind setting
adjustment too easily. I carefully disassembled the Atlas even before using
it to grind any pepper. Shortcomings were immediately apparent in its
mechanism. While the grinding wheel or disk and its mating ring were large
and sturdy there was little play between them which would allow for a signi-
ficant grind "size" adjustment. In fact the grind adjustment is entirely
within what most cooks would describe as a fine setting.

The largest or bottom diameter of the grinding wheel is a bit over 30mm
which is large by most hand mill standards. The threaded screw has a major
(outside) diameter of 0.23" and the threading is nearly 20 turns per inch.
The spring loaded "adjustment" screw is threaded through a cross bar below
the grinding wheel. That bar is about 1/4-inch thick so there is a good amount
of thread surface capture and the mill should stay in adjustment quite well.

I use the term "adjustment" reluctantly because the mechanism can be
adjusted very little the way it is built. Some subtle design feature may
have been lost through the years. Regardless of that major fault I'm happy
to have it for its superior fine grind setting. I'll keep the Unicorn Magnum
for steak au poivre or some stew that calls for a good amount of black pepper.

Of all the pepper mills I've used through the years only the Perfex would
get five stars from me even though it is unattractive in appearance. I've
owned mine for many years.
