- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2023Highly recommend—teaches children compassion and empathy. I read this book as a child. I barely remember the plot of the book, but I remember how it made me feel. Because of this book, I became vegetarian at age 16 and never went back. (Now I’m in my 30s.)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2012Towards the end of this book, the eponymous pig, a dear amiable soul named Johnnie, is shockingly and callously butchered, and all for the sake of money. No matter that he has been raised and treated as the family pet, every bit as much as any dog would be. It leaves a nasty taste in the mouth and is the culmination of some dark threads that run through the story. In truth I found little to like about the characters of The Peppermint Pig, children and adults alike, set in the small minded world of turn of the century provincial England. Perhaps the characters are not meant to be likeable, just realistic and human but if that is the case I don't need a book to tell me this, peoples pettiness and cruelty are on display in every day of real life already. Nina Bawden is undoubtedly a fine storyteller and I suppose it is testament to the world she has created that I even care at all about the fate of a fat, fictional pig over the indignities suffered by his human owners as they struggle for survival in the harsh village they are banished too by their father's fickleness. But as an animal lover and one who knows all too well what love and companionship such creatures as Johnnie can bring into people's lives, if left me feeling down and not inclined to read another book by Bawden anytime soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2013I could write about this book all day. Who knew this would be such an intriguing book? The cover didn’t lead me to think this. The title didn’t lead me to think this. But I knew from page one that this was a special book.
It’s a little story of a family that is set around the turn of the century. The father has to leave his job abruptly and decides to pursue a new career in America. The mother and four children are left in England, staying with two elderly aunts, while the father gets settled.
There’s lots in this little story...a ghost story...a friendship with an impoverished child...a long sickness...and, of course, a pig.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2001Format: PaperbackThe Peppermint Pig is the story of a young girl, Poll, who along with her mother (Emily) brother (Theo) and sister (Lily) goes to live with her aunts in a rural town in England early in teh 20th century. There is a secret surrounding their move from well-off middle class city to living off the aunts' charity. Poll's father has gone away. Could he have committed a crime? A beautiful story of a family's love and pride as Emily struggles to hold the family together and Poll tries to make sense of what has happened and of the prejudice she now faces. The peppermint pig is Johnny - a family pet.
Nina Bawden is a great writer - Carrie's War is another excellent book for teens.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2000Johnny the pig started off as a family pet for a poor girl Emily. The pig was the runt of the litter and no one wanted him. He was given to Emily who treated him as a pet even though the understanding was that he would eventually be eaten. The pig Johnny was very smart and acted like a dog. As the pig got older, he was not as active, and like older pets, he just hung around eating and sleeping. For this poor family who owed many bills, the animal was a luxury that they couldn't afford. Emily comes home from school one day and Johnny is not there. He was sent to the butcher's as payment for a bill. It was devastating to her and also to me. I haven't wanted pork or bacon since. This book was good reading. It is set in the 1920's and the idiomatic language is difficult at times to follow. But overall if you like sad animal stories, you will like this book.

This book is great . Yes it does have some gory tales but theses are short, not necessarily intended to be taken seriously ( the mother tells them) and are actually quite funny in a black humour for children sort of way.
The story does have some of The Railway Children about it with a dabbling of the era of the past episodes of Tom's Midnight Garden.
It also includes ideas about bullying, the fact that everyone has a "back story", and how children can misunderstand which is , effectively, explained for children readers.
But actually, it's just a great story, well written, interesting characterisation and fascinating history. The 10 year old in me loved it and I shall send copies to my 9 and ten year old grandchildren.
By all means gauge your reader's susceptibility to being upset, but discussing it would be better than avoiding it.

•An excellent description of character's internal life
•The story leaves gaps that you need to fill in
•I would recommend it for children of the age of 9+, my dad loved it and he is 40!
•I gave it this review because of how amazingly descriptive it is and how it has got certain characters into my heart.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBoth these stories are quite wonderful. I first read them some years ago, but when we heard of Nina Bawden's recent death it prompted me to read them again ~ so warm, so true to life, both painful and heart-warming : BRILLIANT, both Joy Peach
Kindle CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 20, 20213.0 out of 5 stars Not one to read to your vegetarian kids these days.
I picked this book up as I thought I liked it as a child but I now don't think I read it but may have seen a sanatized version on tv.
Set in the 1900s it tells the story of one families life when they are thrust into poverty when the man of the house ups and leaves for a year.. Although very interesting for adults to read as a short window into life at the turn of 19th 20th century I wouldn't necessarily recommend reading it to kids at bedtime today as it portrays some very problematic views of the time particularly in regards to, animal welfare, the role of women and disability. But this 40 something enjoyed being a kid while reading it as she knows context is everything.
