Jim Pepper (6/18/41-2/10/92) was a jazz saxophonist, composer and singer of Kaw and Muscogee Creek Native American heritage. Pepper's Pow Wow is the debut album led by the Native American saxophonist and composer. It was recorded in 1971 and first released on Herbie Mann's Embryo label. The album features appearances by Larry Coryell & Billy Cobham. Due to popular demand we could not resist putting this title out again!

This lp was given to me back in Boston as a radio only special disc 35 or so years ago... The underground station at the time, wbcn played it and I was blown away at witchitai-to. Jim Pepper's sax playing was always unique and coupled with the indian chants this song was a classic in the Boston area. I just had to play it more and more. Now it is great to drive around and play this song whenever I want. Thanks Amazon for yet another classic rock tune for these tired old ears....

This is a native american inspired classic rock album. It's one of the only examples of this mix of genres that actually works and, while some tracks are better than others, it is a rewarding listen. If you're looking for more traditional or spiritual native american music, this is not it. Likewise if you're a fan of classic rock and don't care about the native american fusion aspect, this would not be essential for your collection. This is for rock fans who are interested in or familiar with native american music. If you fit that description, I think you'll agree that this CD kicks some serious a$$!

Once in a great while a song is seemingly attached to your brain forever. Such was the case , for me , with "Witchi-Tai-To" when first heard in 1970. The vinyl commands huge $ on auction sights and used record stores, and the CD has never before been available. Thank-you Wounded Bird !!

60年代後半にクロスオーヴァの草分け的グループ"The Free Spirits"にラリー・コリエルと共に参加。
独立後はジャズとネイティブアメリカンの音楽の融合を試みるも、当時は評価を得ることは出来ませんでした。

コンボ演奏の合間に、ペッパー本人と親類縁者？による短いコーラス(掛け声)が挿入されている。
ネイティブアメリカンの言語と思われるが、丁度ラグビー・オールブラックスのハカ風に勇壮で土着的味わい。

と言う訳で、それ以外のコンボ演奏の方は、ルーツ色の濃いスワンプな演奏がタップリ愉しめる。
ペッパーのスケールの大きいサックスにジャズ的エモーショナルな瞬間があるが限定的という事で。
その中で、ジャズ/ロック/カントリーと守備範囲の広さを誇る盟友・ラリー・コリエル(g)の小爆発ブリが美しい。

そして、何より、ジム・ペッパーの暖かみのある素朴な歌声が素晴らしい。
時折(と言うか頻繁にｗ)音程が頼りなげになるのはご愛嬌です。

I treasured my lp from dozens of years ago but no longer have a turntable. The CD brought back wonderful memories. The late Jim Pepper was an extraordinary tenor sax player and exceptional composer who managed to combine his Native American influences with rigorous and exciting jazz playing. Woefully out-of-print and pricey but worth searching out. The compilation Comin' and Goin' is a terrific alternative that is somewhat easier to find and more affordable.
