Pretty much all my fat resides in my butt/hips/thighs, and I had a horrible time getting a glute reading thanks to the amount of fat I have there. And I know my glutes are in awful condition I'm not even gonna lie; they are the worst. (Side note: the app won't give you a personalized plan if it can't get all the measurements) But the app says they are "athletic". Um, no honey. Not only that, but thanks to that miss-reading, my personalized plan is off, and so is my fat percentage, since that's pretty much where all of it sits.
I haven't had it long enough to make comparison readings but I *do* have a BIA scale to compare it against. So, it says my fat % is 26.2 which we know is off because it can't read my glutes right. My BIA scale tells me that I have a fat % of 30.9% - now according to the Skulpt website, it's only guessing, because all it can actually read is my muscle, which gives it "impedance" as it's denser than fat or water, but that number would make more sense than 26.2, and fits closer to what the [much more expensive] BIA scale at my dietitian's office tells me.
I am starting to do more weights, which is why I bought this device, so we'll see if it notices my muscle differences over time. I'll try to update my review as I exercise more. But I think it's a good device to have in addition to other sources to corroborate with since nothing we can make is as accurate as we'd like it to be!
I was a little worried about ordering this because so many of the mixed reviews. I did notice many that mentioned problems with the Skulpt not pairing to their phone. Noticing that many of them made reference to being on Android (which is probably harder to support due to the huge variety of devices and versions of software), and me being on iPhone, I thought I would gamble and give it a shot.
Pairing with the iPhone 6S Plus, on iOS 10, was totally painless. No problems at all. I've had it for about 6 weeks and done 3 full body scans. There's a tiny little water bottle that you fill and you're supposed to spray the sensor each time before you apply it to your body. It tells you which muscle, shows a picture of where to apply the sensor, you hold it there and wait for it to take the measurement... and then move to the next one. For each area it tells you the muscle quality, and body fat percentage. At the end, you can see a drawing of a body with all the different muscles and it shows different shades in each muscle to indicate either the body fat or muscle quality (you can display one or the other).
There's an analyze option that will tell you if there are any muscle imbalances or things to be concerned about, and recommend exercises to do.
With my 3 full body scans, the results have been consistent. You can look at your overall muscle quality and body fat and see a line graph that shows the change over time, or you can go in to individual muscles to look at the same information. I can't really vouch for the accuracy of the device. I've been pushing myself hard with my workouts over the last month and have seen the Skulpt scanner results reflect some minor improvements. The consistent results, and improvements that seem to tie to what I am doing in the gym, at least lead me to believe that I'll be able to keep track of if I'm heading in the right direction -- and that's all that really matters.
If I had to to give some negative feedback:
- I wish the Skulpt scanner didn't use a proprietary dock to charge -- would rather it just have a charging port on it like micro USB or something.
- I feel like there is a lot of good information that is collected, but the app doesn't really present it in an intriguing or meaningful way. Like for instance... when you are doing a scan, at the time you scan each muscle it could say this is how you compare to 30 days about, 60 days ago, 90 days ago -- right then. Give you some encouragement. Also, Data visualization is a pretty hot field right now and this app could really benefit from an overhaul in how the data is presented and shared.
- I couldn't figure out how to have a second user use this and save their data. For example.. it has a guest mode.. which is nice. But it doesn't let you save the results.
Overall it is pretty good, I like it, no pairing issues, the app could stand some improvements.
One connected, it works incredibly well. It’s fast and easy to use. If you’re looking how to beat measure your fitness results, I highly recommend this.
The app keeps track of all your measurements and has a guest mode if someone else wants a quick scan.
You can share results quickly and easily. I would love to see if you could share all results for a scan, instead of sharing the front fat %, front muscle quality, and the backs of each. To share the results, you have to share it 4 times.
I love the device but sharing and the initial setup dropped the rating to a 4.
