I regret not reading these books sooner. The story is really action packed and hilarious. It was fun to watch the characters go on their adventures and evolve as individuals. I really liked the modern twist to each of the gods. Despite the fact that this book is supposed to be for kids, it's a great series for people of all ages. I got myself this box set as soon as I had a few bucks. I look forward to reading Riordan's HoO series and the Kane Chronicles.
I originally wanted to get the hardcover box set with the first edition covers, but it was too expensive. I decided to get the paperback edition with John Rocco's new art on it instead. These covers are amazing. They make me want to keep reading the books over and over again. I highly recommend these books to anyone and everyone.
I got this set for my 12-year-old daughter and she loves it. I ordered the paperback version, and everything arrived as advertised. The books included are: The Lightning Thief (400 pages), The Sea of Monsters (304 pages), The Titan's Curse (336 pages), The Battle of the Labyrinth (384 pages), and The Last Olympian (416 pages). They come in a simple decorated cardboard box (click on the Paperback option to see this) which is adequate for this. The "treasure chest" box comes with the hardcover set. These aren't comic books or graphic novels; they're full-fledged books.
If your child (or yourself) is into anime, manga, or fantasy novels, this is a great starter set. Buying the five books by themselves will run you about $31, so paying $21 for the whole set and a decorated box is a good deal.
Just kidding. These are very good-to-excellent youth books. I specifically choose Riordan's boxed set because I knew how well they would be received by my 13-year old grandson who is an avid reader of fantasy action, as am I. I plan for this to be part of a collection for his life and library.
