I just just listened to the CD for the first time in quite awhile and I was reminded once again of how extremely fun & brilliant this recording is. (Of course I am biased having followed the group for several years.)
I wanted to point out that in addition to being an audio CD, "Perennial Favorites" is also an interactive CD-ROM playable in both Windows & Apple operating systems. Considered by many critics to be the most elaborate ECD ever created, this ground-breaking interactive extravaganza created over a three year period contains the following:
18 minutes of live performance video consisting of 15 different live clips including 8 songs from the "Perennial" CD, a backstage montage taken from eight shows, a documentary on recording "Perennial Favorites" at Kensway, the MTV banned "Put A Lid On It" video in its entirety and other funny stuff.
Within the interactive presentation are an additional 22 minutes of audio including audio clips and lyrics to all songs from the Zippers' previously released "The Inevitable," "Hot," & "Sold Out" albums. The "Perennial Favorites" interactive section also accesses the audio tracks from the CD directly so the "Perennial Favorites" audio tracks are playable in their entirety in full CD audio quality.
Also within the presentation is a 363 page interactive book of interviews with the band that recounts the history and formation of the Zippers through a series of interviews conducted by me spanning two years with Katharine Whalen, Jimbo Mathus, Chris Phillips, Tom Maxwell, Je Widenhouse, Tom Maxwell, Ken Mosher, Andrew Bird, Mike Napolitano & Don Raleigh. Also discussed is the creation of all the Zipper songs from "Inevitable" to "Perennial" from a variety of bandmember perspectives. There are also very rare personal photos that have never been seen before throughout the book's sections as well.
Please check out this aspect of both of these discs!

"Ghost of Stephen Foster" is a rather strange song; very hard to describe and the lyrics don't make that much sense, but boy is it ever fun to listen to. It's the best song on the album. A lot of the zippers lyrics don't make all that much sense if you just read them. You wonder how they could possibly make a song out of that! The fact is, I think the zippers could make a song out of anything and make it sound good. The subject matter isn't all that important. Katherine Whalen sings on several of the selections and she has a voice like no other; just a few of her vocals are well worth the price of the album. Not that I agree, but some people have been critical of SNZ for sounding, at times, like an amateur band. Who cares, as long as they are so very, very entertaining and have such a unique sound? No one in their right mind could call this music boring. I also own thier "Hot" album and while you can hear some similarities in the sound, this is NOT "more of the same". It's a different album with different, unique treats to listen to. Given a choice between one or the other, it would be difficult to pick. I suggest that you buy both! The accompanying lyrics booklet is unique too. It looks like an old flower and vegetable catalog. Very creative. When you are tired of hearing the same old stuff, put on a zippers album to hear something fun and different. This is destined to be a classic if it doesn't slip into obscurity because it is difficult to classify. That's another interesting thing about SNZ. They just don't conveniently fit into a specific musical category.

To be honest I only ordered this because I had a little money left over on a gift card and my girlfriend really likes their Hot album. But it was a pleasant surprise to listen to their music. I like it! The older sound is nice to hear, and the fact that this band is more modern is a really cool characteristic of their music. I enjoyed this album, but I think I prefer their Hot album. It seemed to be more... cool. SNZ is a very talented band and I would recommend this to anyone that's into the older styles of music before Rock 'n' Roll.

Ok, some of the numbers sound like they only have one sheet of music and are passing it around, working from rather drunken memory when someone else has it. And yes, from the acoustics, you can reasonably expect to hear a garage door opener in the background, perhaps even as one of the major instruments.
Having said this, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. The fun these folks had doing this album infects every cut. If you can manage to stay grumpy while listening to "The Suits are Picking Up the Bill" or "True Macacq" then you should take up being a hermit in a cave, as there is no hope for you.
Buy the album. Smile, laugh and enjoy. Insanity is both infectious and fun.

I love this band! As a refuge from the punk movement of the 70s and 80s, I think youth music is moving towards tonality and harmony that the alternative musinc of the 80s and 90 have lacked. It's funny, but the same kinds of people I am seeing turned on by the swing movement were the same type or people who were drawn to Punk and industrial in my generation. I guess the best way to make your way in the world is to rebel against the austerity and atonality of the punk sensibility of your parent s generation! I think the squirrel nut zippers are a great example of this!!!
