I am 24 years old, usually at that line where some teen novels are too immature while others straddle the line of maturity and immaturity that keep me interested. This story, about a young girl her freshman and sophomore years of college, is a perfect fit. The narration between Kate and Reed is wonderful. I began loving the two of them right from the start. The story is very realistic and you are able to identify with many of the feelings within this story.
Kate has an emotional roller coaster ride in this novel and understanding her thoughts and feelings make you love her even more. She's not the perfect heroine and, as a reader, your able to understand her actions. I love to see how she progresses in this book. She is portrayed as a realistic young woman who goes through many emotional traumas. At times, she is unable to cope. It is at this point Reed becomes her saving grace. The emotional bond they have is amazing. Quick side note, is Reed not the perfect man or what? By the end **semi-spoiler** the reader is unsure where things between them lie after everything that has happened.
I think this is such a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves this genre. I haven't read any other books by this author but I am looking forward to the third book of this series!
I've never understood the formula of pairing a swooning, weak, innocent girl who meekly falls under the spell of the 6-3 womanizing upperclassman hero who freely admits to her that he's only used girls for sex until now, and lots. But oh, its OK because he always used protection and got tested regularly And hasn't had sex in months, although he's had his eye on the heroine for over a year. Like he should get a medal for abstemious behavior. And she basically gives him one, because telling her about his predatory past because it was so hard for him to do, and anyway, she already knew he was a cad. And he's got beautiful blue eyes. And she worries that she'll disappoint him because she hasn't been around as much herself. Sounds like the perfect, submissive girl that a predator would drool over. (Turns out he's just like dad.) Why is this the model for the guy who sweet little college freshmen coeds throw themselves at in these novels? Lets not forget the abs and toned muscles. Yuck.
And why would said guy not use her as well? Because he says so, of course. And we have to have faith that he will lose his stripes because he so adores her and has found true love. Don't worry, his stripes reappear at the end. In fact, he does his best to be unfaithful, but poor guy, he just can't.
I must have read a dozen or more of these novels. Other formulaic elements include the broken home, the mentally ill mom, the jealous, controlling, violent ex-boyfriend, the fight between ex and current, whom she actually calls her knight in shining armor, the trauma and emergency room visit, the angst over letting the past relationship go. Anything else? Well, yes, what the author calls "a little smut," dragging out the actual sex act until the very end, after multiple trips to third base, the hesitant going down scene (just to show that she really can take command) The forced, contrived separation to create a cliffhanger.
Other than that, the book is slow and repetitive. Dare I say boring?

This is Reed and Kate's story.
At the beginning of the story Kate is broken hearted by the one man that she believed loved her, Kyle. He went off his freshman year of college wanting to start the year off single. Also leaving Kate behind, all alone, just when the one person she trusted and needed most walks out of her life as well. Kate is then going off to college, where she will become friends with the sasstastic Mags and together they will enter into the journey that will change both of their lives forever.
Reed is a popular, blue-eyed, super rich boy who is unusually down to earth, and has been hurt in the past. He's only ever used the girls that have walked across his past, but when you indulge deeper into the book you find out what's gotten him so interested in one night stands. But when he meets Kate at a party he needs to decide whether Kate is worth giving up using women and being in a committed relationship with a girl who isn't quite sure how to trust anymore.
Kate has the choice to either stay shy and closed off towards everyone, or to jump out of her comfort zone and take a chance with a boy she never would've thought would be so into her. Together, Kate and Reed have to decide if they want to stay committed to each other, and take on the many forces that are trying to tear them apart, or to just walk away and stay comfortable in their own little worlds.
She recommended it and boy it didn't disappoint you at all...
