He is a Navy pilot staying with his sister's son while she is deployed. That happens!! He is sort of learning as he goes on how to take care of a 5 year old that has just lost his father to an accident, and then his mother is called up to deploy. However, he finds a stray cat, hurt and in need of care. They rush it to the local Vet's office and meet the lady vet.
The story takes off from there. One scene, where the hero visits the vet's office for the second time was so funny I am still laughing out loud. I love this guy!! I really enjoyed this story, duh?? It was great and I am still smiling. I highly recommend it if you would like a feel good romance story with just enough sex to make you swoon. Great story.
His nephew, Jacob, finds an injured stray cat that Stefan dislikes but he takes to the vet anyway. There he meets Calista Webber, a sexy vet that the little town of Maplesville pities because of a childhood trauma she suffered and her public divorce. Their romance starts as nothing more than a fling but soon turns into more. I love the addition of Sandy, the cat, because I’m a huge animal lover. She’s also the glue that holds this broken family together.
The only thing that annoyed me was Calista's constant inner dialogue. She kept thinking about leaving town to start over at a new vet practice and it got a little old after a while. It's like she couldn't think of anything else but that except for when Stefan was around to distract her.
Set at Christmas time, this heartwarming romance brought tears to my eyes. Stefan, Callie and Jacob are all suffering from pain and find comfort in each other. I love the author’s writing style, it followed beautifully, and I’m interested in reading the other novellas in the series.
The things I liked....and disliked...
I loved that the author included a situation where a child has just lost his father, and his mother was deployed overseas. That situation is happening everyday here in the U.S.. BUT... this is where I think the author dropped the ball with not delving into the little boy's emotional state a little further. There was something else not quite right with this part though--- and I know for a fact, coming from a military family--- that if there is a child involved and one parent is already deceased, they usually won't send that surviving parent overseas. Plus there's the fact that this parent is now the sole provider for such child.
Then there's the Uncle, which I adored for taking the time out of his own life of grief over the possible loss of his future career, to tend to the needs of his nephew while his sister is gone. BUT... it was never really explained , how he got injured in the first place.
As far as Callie goes, I thought the author did very well on that front. I am really happy about the way she went into more depth with that character.
While I am somewhat happy with the ending, it felt a little rushed. One minute the child was sick with a stomach virus and carrying a temperature, and the next page it went straight to an epilogue, that never mentioned that scene again. To me; it just felt like there were still a lot of loose ends.
