From Booklist

As Tyler launches the X-Ops series, Special Forces captain Landon Donovan is abruptly assigned to a politically controversial, secret Homeland Security unit that pairs humans with shifters, part-animal counterparts carrying natural genetic mutations. His new and gorgeous partner, Ivy Halliwell, is part cat, has lost two previous partners and is now known as “Poison Ivy.” Despite this, she and Landon not only work well together but give in to a fierce sexual attraction and fall in love. Before this can complicate their work lives, though, they are sent to catch an evil German scientist who is kidnapping biologists. Ivy is captured during their raid, and Donovan calls on his former special ops team and another shifter in their unit to help rescue her and kill the bad guys. But two of those escape with samples of her blood, paving the way for the next X-Ops installment. This is an action-packed, sensual genre-blend of military and paranormal romance with appeal for readers of both. The explicit sex scenes, while limited in number, show the influence of erotica on both subgenres. --Mary K. Chelton

A spec-ops shifter heroine newly paired with a Special Forces hero for a hidden government agency who must learn to work together, trust each other and keep it strictly business just sounded like my kind of fun so I had to read it. This series opener really delivered too. Scenes just sparkled when these two main characters were present and I loved the action elements as much as the romance in this military-style paranormal.

The story opens with Ivy Halliwell losing her latest partner on a covert mission because he couldn't accept what she was and wouldn't work with her as a team. The scene changes to introduce Special Forces Captain Landon Donovan and his Special Forces team ready to take out one of the big baddies of terrorism. Without explanation he is pulled off his team and shipped out to DC to be transferred to a secret agency. He is given a new partner and a new job. The only thing he is told is that he is the back-up and it's his job to take out his partner if the partner falls into the hands of the enemy. Landon isn't wired that way and he really isn't wired for what they ask him to do next which is to attack and take-down the woman he is introduced to as his partner.

Ivy is disappointed to discover that she has been assigned yet another he-man soldier who will be just like the rest and won't treat her skills with respect because she's a woman and be disgusted that she's a shifter. Her assumptions are rocked from the moment they engage in training when Landon fights well, but not to overpower her with strength, he respects her as his partner, accepts her shifter gifts and her fighting skills, he won't listen to gossip about her, and he seems to have her back.

Reading is subjective and what one person likes another won't. Thank goodness we all know this, because I have to admit that, despite generally good reviews, I pretty much hated this book. More accurately, I hated the character portrayals, Ivy especially.

The short version is that weak, teary, insecure heroines who are supposed to be top agents but spend all their time jumping to ridiculous, self-effacing conclusions and whinging, make me want to scratch my own eyes out with a dulled lemon zester.

Pair them with a man, described as practically god-like and allowed to makes all the decisions for himself and, said, pretend strong female lead and I'm ready to throw my head in an electric mixer instead. I'm just totally baffled how anyone could think this is the type of pairing self-assured women would want to relate to.

I considered casting the book on the DNF pile at ~35%. At this point Ivy had made what she perceived to be a mistake on a mission. When her partner appears angry she got teary, emotional and evasive. The reader was then subjected to pages of her weepy self-recriminations and ridiculously jumping to conclusions. All this followed by giving in to her passion for Landon.

Said another way, the author took a supposedly strong female character, broke her down and proved her to in fact be extremely fragile (as all women apparently should be) then threw her in the arms of a man. All this as if to suggest that given a stressful situation Ivy couldn't be expected to control her emotions too and that the man's sexual appreciation would prove her self-worth and, as Landon seemed to find it all so darned attractive, it must really be OK in the end anyway. Gag, I say. GAG!

Take a Special Force Marine add a feline shifter and you have the “perfect” team. Landon and Ivy must learn to work together and trust each other while working for a special government organization while not giving in to the chemistry they feel for each other.

Landon was pulled from his team and sent back to DC to pair with Ivy to combat terrorism in the US. He is told to learn to work with Ivy and should she be comprised he is to eliminate her. This is not Landon's way, as a Marine you never leave anyone behind.

Ivy feels all military men are macho and have no respect for women. When she finds out she has been paired with Landon she is sure he will be just like all the rest. Imagine her surprise when not only does he accept her as a feline shifter, but the chemistry is wild. Has she found her perfect partner?

Get a copy today and find how Landon and Ivy come together with a little help from Landon's Special Op's group. You won't be disappointed. Looking forward to many more in this series. Kudos to Paige Tyler for another winner.

If the cover and synopsis don't grab your attention, you probably won't enjoy the book, but if it did, like me, I think you'll love it! I also like how the story is slightly more believable because they don't completely shift to an animal, but have enhanced senses with the animal qualities and minor shifting because of their DNA.

Yay, a female lead! Ivy is the alpha in this story, and while she has issues she needs to overcome stemming from her past because she is different, she is a strong, intelligent woman. It is just a nice change from the more typical action stories with alpha men. And then there is Landon. He really is her perfect mate. You already know you'll love him by how he treats his Special Forces unit, and how well his team regards him.

There is lots of action and great chemistry. I'm looking forward to the next in this series.
