In The Perfect Wife, Blake Pierce writes with the confidence and skill of a high school student in danger of flunking a class in basic composition and creativity.

In The Stepford Wives part of the book, yuppie couple Kyle and Jessie move from their LA apartment to an upscale suburb down the California coast. Kyle convinced Jessie the move would be good for his business and a better place to raise the children they both wanted. Jessie was not quite as enthusiastic, especially when she saw that the wives in their new town were all complacent conformists. Everyone’s life centered around a sinister country club with strange initiation rites. In The Silence of the Lambs part, Jessie was training to be a forensic psychologist and her interviews with a brilliant serial killer led her to unlock her own dark past and confront her suffocating present.

There are so many reasons not to read this book. First, the author’s manuscript was missing words in multiple places, showing a careless disregard for her work product and her readers. Second, she uses dialogue tags to excess, the sure sign of an amateur unable to convey what her characters are feeling or thinking without spelling it out — or of a writer with the ability but too lazy to write better. Third, The Stepford Wives part of her story was unbelievable, unoriginal, and unnecessary, except to extend the length of her book. The Silence of the Lambs part was uninspired and also unoriginal. Jessie and Crutchfield could not hold a candle to Clarice and Hannibal.

And finally, a spoiler alert: Anyone who has ever seen a movie on the Lifetime channel will be able to identify the book’s villain without even finishing the first page.

“The Impact of Non-Rehabilitative Long-Term Incarceration on The Criminally Insane”

4.5 stars. Jessie Hunt, an older graduate student, has finished her thesis but is doing her practicum at a unit for the criminally insane. Jessie actually gets to question a sociopathic monster who has been put away for life. This part of the story thread is cloaked in secrecy, but is not hard to figure out. Jessie suffered a traumatic event as a small child and this could explain her interest in forensic psychology. Meanwhile, Jessie’s life with husband, Kyle, is out of control.

The characterizations in “The Perfect Wife” are really fascinating. Jessie has issues, as you can imagine. Kyle is charming and financially successful. The twists and surprises in the story are well done. Anyone can be naive sometimes? Can they be intuitive at the same time? Yes. Sociopaths are not so easy to recognize, as the author cleverly demonstrates. One reviewer brought up a good point about rating a book. I believe that if I am engrossed or can hardly put the book down, and if I learn a little along the way, that is a winner of a read. This is such a book. The ending sets up the next book in the series. A very entertaining read!

This was a good read. I ended up reading it in 3 sittings because it really drew me in. There are a lot of great twists along the way. There were a few things that I disliked about this book. We know that the main character, Jessie, is tortured by her past, but there were some pretty lame parts that would vaguely hint to what happened to her. It didn't give us any insight into the character, and didn't add any value to the story, and was frankly just annoying. Also, do authors not get their books edited? I read quickly, and know that I skip over words sometimes because of that, but even I noticed so many grammatical errors, it distracted me from the book. I don't understand why any author would spend all that time writing a novel, and then not want to make sure it's perfect before having it available to the public. I took one star off just for that because I think it's frustrating to have to deal with distracting mistakes as a reader. Overall an entertaining read with plenty of suspense, but I don't think I'll go on to read the rest of the series unless I can get those free on Kindle like this one.

There is no way I could give this 5 stars because those are reserved for things like Orphan Master's Son,Deon Myers, or Jake Needham, but I do give them occasionally to other books. What really is a 5 star rating? Is it one of the best books you've read, or is it one that you can't put down? I don't know so I flip back and forth.
I really liked this book. It held my interest and I stayed up until 2 a.m. to finish it. It was somewhat predictable, but not as bad as most other books.
Actually, I'm going to pre-order the next book in the series right now.
I recommend it.

Very poorly written. Filled with cliche after cliche. Brilliant but psychologically fragile Jessie is so “brilliant” she can do things more experienced profilers can’t. Her husband has just joined the Smalltown Wives’ Men’s Club and stays out late when she’s made a fancy dinner. She drinks a $100 bottle of wine in disappointment. She gets bored that she’s the only woman in their new community with a job... oh, wait, she doesn’t have a job. She’s still a student. The main character Jessie and the other women are so Flat, I thought the author was a male who didn’t think much of women. Pass on this one

I've read other books by the author but only made it to half-way with this one. The main character has moved to a new place where none of the women seem to work and everyone is a member of a strange members' club with an unfeasibly high annual fee. She is pursuing her course in forensics by getting to meet with a serial killer in a high-security unit. He knows things about her which he shouldn't and he is adept at "getting into people's heads". Jessie Hunt has secrets from her husband and her tutor, but these had not been revealed by the time I gave up. I realised I didn't care enough about anything in the book to carry on.

At times this book showed promise to be a good read, then something not really credible would happen; mainly this related to Jessie's interaction with her neighbour, friends and spouse. She appears very naive about some things, and then she's proving how clever she is. I almost felt that 2 people had a hand in writing the story. In fairness, I have to say that about 3/4 of the way through, it started to really speed up and get exciting and interesting, and so 4* was the appropriate mark. There are several unanswered questions, which I assume will be covered in the next book

Something terrible happened to Jessie Hunt in her childhood, but by her late twenties she seemed to have everything as she was the wife of a loving, rich, and successful husband and they were happily awaiting the birth of their first child. They had moved from a cramped downtown apartment to a large up-market house near the sea, and they became swept up alongside welcoming neighbours in a type of country club where their social lives were set to blossom. In addition Jessie was finishing off a masters degree in forensic psychology and she was looking forward to working as a criminal profiler.

Everything seemed perfect, yet the social side of Jessie’s life turned to being something akin to ‘Stepford Wives’ and her involvement with a jailed serial killer was akin to Hannibal Lecter in ‘Silence of the Lambs’. These sinister elements provide all and more than enough for prolific author Blake Pierce of crime thrillers and psychological mysteries.to weave a gripping and compelling tale. Indeed it may be the drama is just too implausible and the characters are not credible – but hey – it’s fiction. As a novel ‘The Perfect Wife’ starts quite slowly but soon builds up pace with much tension and suspense, and it reaches a shattering conclusion. Readers must suspend belief to accept Jessie’s childhood nightmares and her relationship with an evil sociopath, and to acquiescence to the sordid side of a hedonistic existence. It is a ridiculous romp – but exciting and entertaining.
