Avelyn is the pride of her parents--lovely, intelligent, sweet tempered, skilled in all pursuits expected of a great lady, and nicely rounded. Unfortunately, her nasty cousins have taunted her so unceasingly for so many years that she feels ugly, fat, and undesirable. A series of humiliating incidents on her wedding day and thereafter has also convinced her new husband, Paen de Gerville, that she is not only frail but accident-prone, and the comical misunderstandings that result lead to more unhappiness for Avelyn. But eleventh-century England is dangerous and demanding, and soon her natural optimism overcomes her feelings of inadequacy, allowing her to take control and succeed as chatelaine of Rumsfeld in spite of the mishaps that continue to plague her. Sands has cleverly woven a suspenseful subplot into this medieval coming-of-age romance, and her characters--including two sets of overanxious but loving parents, a clumsy squire-in-training, and a pet piglet--delight, while her trademark humor and vivid settings enthrall the reader. She hopes her groom is partial to cherries …
For that's what Avelyn fears she will resemble at their wedding feast: too round, too red, in the scarlet gown she barely fits into . . . and perhaps too tart for his taste? Her groom no doubt wants a sweet, biddable bride, tiny and trim, as Avelyn is desperately trying to appear.
After the lonely, harsh life of a knight, Paen Gerville desires a lively, well-rounded woman, one with soft, plump breasts to cushion his weary head. Yet his wife-to-be promises no such delights—and her health is apparently so fragile that she faints in his arms after their first kiss. But all it takes is one split bridal gown for her hidden assets to become eye-poppingly apparent. And Paen can anticipate a glorious wedding night filled with other delightful surprises as he sets out to convince Avelyn what he already knows in his heart: that she is indeed . . . The Perfect Wife!

It's nie to see parents in a romance book and their advice to the newly weds.
I enjoyed this book, no great drama, but a lovely love story with lots of funny moments.
THE PERFECT WIFE is the third book I've read by Lynsay Sands and although I loved the other two more, this was still a good story. I didn't find it quite as funny as the other ones (where I laughed so hard I cried) which is the reason for four stars instead of five. And while I really liked both Paen and Avelyn, neither one ever truly tugged at my heart. They were cute and absolutely made for each other, but didn't communicate well so needless to say there were multiple misunderstandings as a result. Poor Avelyn has many mishaps, and the story does have its serious moments when some of these occur. For the most part however, it was simply a very charming and fun story. A definite must read for any fan of Ms. Sands and perfect for anyone looking for a light-hearted historical romance that'll make you laugh out loud. An even better recommendation would be "Love Is Blind" which is my favorite by this author and one of the rare books I happily re-read =)
The Perfect Wife-was beyond charming. (You will love Clarissa and Adrian--who feel very real with personal struggles everyone can relate to on some level. OOOps--these lovely characters are from Love is Blind which is a definate don't miss! As I said, I've been devouring all of her books lately.)
Now for the real characters of the Perfect Wife--which I certainly have not forgotten. The lovely Avelyn so self conscience of being too round she causes some rather hysterical scenes that I will not give away except to say that those of us with round faces can all relate to the "fish face"! And her hero Paen, much like my husband God bless him--likes her exactly as she is and finds her beautiful and sexy and sets out to make her believe it. What a man!
