This is a book that I had a hard time rating. There were several things that I liked and several things that I didn't. For instance, I liked the writing, in that the author wove a good story. She fleshed out the characters well, even some of the secondary characters. Unfortunately, the author is also a cr*p editor. The book is absolutely riddled with errors: missing and misplaced words, incorrect words, random names, etc. For the love of good writing, PROOF READ!

I liked Michael's character. A little too-good-to-be-true, but then this is a romance. I alternately liked and was exasperated with Karis's character. I thought that their main conflict was mostly her fault. There was no time that he could have told her his secret without her using it to end their relationship. The story was redeemed for me, by the fact that she realized her own problems and worked to correct them. I really liked the friend, Eve. She was a lovely snarky counterpoint.

There were facets to Karis's character that were well drawn and very sympathetic. Then there were facets that jarred, they were so far from what I expected. She came across as a bit childish, quite a few times, and it didn't fit for me. My final complaint would be the overuse of the F-word. I don't mind a well placed F-bomb, especially where its use helps define a character. But this story had over 200 instances and I thought it was overused, particularly by school-teacher Karis.

Think sexy professor Gabriel Emerson meets Simon Wallbanger and you have Michael Finn. He's one hot, sexy, Literature Professor/retired Marine who is relentless in winning the heart of the woman he loves. The love of his life, Karis Bennett, has experienced unimaginable loss in her life and despite her attempt to keep her heart safe from further heartbreak, she can't resist the undeniable connection she feels with Michael.

There are few books I've taken the time to write a review for, but feel compelled to spread the word about this one. I won't summarize the plot because it's already been done in most of the other reviews. What I will say are all of the things that I think make this such a great book. It has one heck of a hot, sexy, swoon-worthy man, an intelligent, witty, a little bit crazy leading lady, a hysterical, sassy, snarky best friend, great plot, great witty banter, and some of the best-written sex scenes-(the panty-wetting variety ;-) ) Between the witty banter between the characters, the humorous inner-dialog, the hot sex and compelling story, this is one of the best books I've read in a while. It's very well-written and has great character development. There are few steamy romance books that have characters written in such high definition. Thank you, Mrs. St. Clare for sharing your writing talent with the book world. I'm looking forward to seeing more great things from you in the future!

So... a crazy-hot Marine and a sexy feisty widow walk into a bar... Yeah, you had me at Marine! ☺

Perfecting the Odds is the sexy story of Michael Finn ~ a Marine turned college professor ~ and Karis Bennett ~ a widow who has decided that love only equals loss and heartache. When these two first meet, they are both at very different points in their lives. Karis is struggling with grief/loss and Michael is just looking for a little bit of fun. They feel an intense and unexpected attraction but life has other plans in store for them. Three years later, they meet again and that's when the real fun begins!

I really enjoyed reading this story! I knew I was going to get "sexy and erotic" but what I didn't expect was that this story was also funny and emotional. Karis was sarcastic and funny but Eve (her best friend) was truly my favorite. She was raunchy, funny, supportive, and slapped some sense into Karis whenever she needed it. Then, of course, there is Michael... *sigh* He was 100% intense "alpha-male" sexy but he was also sweet, thoughtful, patient, and romantic. The heat between Michael and Karis was intense from the start. The sexual tension and build up made the erotic scenes so much better. You will not be disappointed!

What I really liked was how emotional this story turned out to be. When certain events take place and secrets are revealed, the story becomes intense in other ways. I thought the secondary characters really shined when this happened. They moved the story along and kept it from stalling out. Now, the epilogue just sealed the deal for me... loved it! Overall, I thought this was a fun story with interesting twists and great sex! What more could you want?

I was given a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you asked me this morning what I was expecting to think after reading Perfecting the Odds; I would have told you something along the lines of- "probably just another story where the heroine's heart would be torn to pieces as the love of her life slips away and she finds herself in another's arms. With some steamy sex scenes thrown in, perhaps."

Facepalm… damn was I wrong!

After reading the blurb, I was intrigued by the story line. However, I didn't know what to expect so kept my expectations minimal. Brenna St. Clare did an impeccable job building this story as well as the characters. After reading her bio, I am not one bit surprised that she, too, was an English teacher I really enjoyed how well she integrated literature into the story. The poems and verses she referred to fit perfectly!
I found myself laughing out loud as I read (which also earned a few questioning glances from my hubby lol). I think the ice cream date scene was when I'd laughed most. So much wit and sexual innuendos; I loved it! On a personal note: wet nuts?! Is that a regional thing? Because over here in New England, I'm surrounded by ice cream shops and have never seen that on the toppings list ;p

Okay, back to the story. I don't know how to explain the progression of the book; it wasn't rushed, but it also wasn't dragged out for pages and pages. It just flowed; flawlessly in my opinion. I never found myself bored or waiting for the next shoe to drop. It all just came naturally. I don't know how to explain it other than it was definitely refreshing compared to novels I've read recently.
The only thing that I didn't care for was the perspective.
