I've struggled to write this review.
I didn't want to go into anything overly personal but at the same time I felt like Willow's story forced you to reveal a little of yourself.

So many woman deal with body image issues.
So often the way we see ourselves is in a negative light.
And so so so often we feel so completely unworthy that being motivated to put in effort, to change and make ourselves better, is almost impossible.

How can you change your self perception when you don't think you are worthy of that change? It's extremely hard.

Growing up I was a skinny girl. I never had weight issues, but I had other issues. I never really knew WHO I was. I looked for my sense of worth in so many bad places. Once I turned 18, I got married, and within a couple months was pregnant. After that, I began to have not only self worth issues (brought in from BEFORE my marriage), but body image issues as well. I put on A LOT of weight. And with every child I had (I have 3 kids), my hips grew thicker, my butt grew bigger, my boobs got fuller, and my tummy was rounder.

Slowly over time these "self image issues" have grown in leaps and bounds. And I have lost any sense of who I am.

I think that's where so many woman will relate to Willow and this story. I really can't explain how much Willow is EVERY WOMAN. She feels like she's not good enough. She feels fat and ugly and unworthy of love and compassion. But the thing that separates Willow and makes her so inspiring is that under all that pain and rejection is woman who has FIGHT in her.

She knows that SHE is the only one who can PULL herself out. And she is ready to try and turn things around. Her toxic marriage is ending.

Perfectly Imperfect, by Harper Sloan tells the story of Willow Tate. Told first person, mostly from Willows POV, though there are a few chapters at key points told by Kane Masters.

Fascinatingly, its two love stories told in the one book. Yes, there's a romance that builds between those two characters, but for that love to have even a chance of succeeding, there's someone else Willow needs to learn to love. Not her step-father, not her half-sister, no. The person Willow needs to learn to love is herself.

You see, Willow, at the start of this story, struggles with crippling self loathing, related in large part (but not completely) to her own body image issues, and when you're that far gone, no amount of reassurance from outside sources help terribly much, since you just assume they're just saying what you want to hear and not the truth.

Reminding me somewhat of Shakespeare's Hamlet, where he has a play within a play, Harper employs the plot device of having the major characters working on producing a movie, the storyline of which resonates with the overall story of the book. and themes reverberate off other themes resulting in a beautiful love story where strength and weakness meet and come together in a breathtaking fusion.

Ever since I first heard of this book I've been hanging out to read it, and though I'm admittedly a fan of Harper's other works, this one is something else entirely. Easily one of my favorite books of the year.

I just loved it, and can't recommend it strongly enough to anyone, whether they've struggled with their self worth as Willow did or not.

This is such a emotional journey of a book; it is not all roses and sunshine. The author writes a story that gripes you inside and out. You will feel the pain of the heroine , Willow, and you want to grab her and just hug her tight. Her path has been one of nothing but one of pain and degradation—and all from her family. Isnt family supposed to love you Well, hers doesn’t and has never loved her, only her mom and she is dead and buried. She is put down for her weight, she is put down for many of things but what gets me is how vicious they are toward her.
Enter Kane Masters in her life. He is a movie star and he sees a woman that he knows he needs in his life immediately. They meet and Kane doesn’t see what Willow sees in the mirror. What he sees is a beautiful, lovely woman who is sexy inside and out. He can tell she is a spitfire waiting to happen. He treats her like the prize, the princess she is. Willow thinks he is too good to be true but she falls deeper and deeper in love with him
There are a lot of twists and turns in this book- and one major moment that you are left going Omg, WTH?? But like all roller coaster rides, hang on to your seats, the ride will take you on an experience you do not want to miss. I enjoyed reading Willow story. My heart broke for her and I cried so much while reading this book. Angry tears, sad tears, happy tears, confused tears…back to happy tears… There is a lot of emotional drama in the story. You would think that would overburden the story line but it doesn’t. It works for the plot and the ending is awesome. I cannot say enough good things about this story. She writes this book and shows how we are all unique and pretty in our own ways, and to realize that we our beautiful –This was such a terrific message and so brave for her to share her story.
