This book is a guide to assessing the quality of your risk management using performance benchmarking, which the authors define as "comparing your organization's processes and risk management performance against internal measures, industry standards, and best practices from other industries".
To achieve performance benchmarking, the authors show how to develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which provide "detailed measures established to assess and shape progress toward achievement of strategic objectives of an organization that usually incorporate or align to organizational objectives, project milestones, incident rates, budgets, and target levels of customer acceptance".
Talbot and Jakeman explain how to set up risk management KPIs and performance standards for one's business, how to establish a reporting framework, and how to present KPIs to various target audiences.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK
o This book is a practical guide full of methods and checklists with the aim of getting you started immediately.
o Explanations are clear and step-by-step and are supported by a selection of helpful diagrams and tables.
o The concepts and suggestions are illustrated by real-world examples, which range from large government organizations to the TravelReady travel safety training program.
o There is an emphasis on using items already to hand (for example, using data and software that your organization already has).
o The authors advise on building "short, simple, succinct and easy-to-understand" KPIs and warn that "complex KPIs do not work". In short, the KISS strategy.
o A great summary, "Ten Tips for Top KPIs", that I think should be put on the wall of every person involved in risk management.
WHAT I DO NOT LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK
o The bibliography contains just two items. I personally would have liked some more references to follow up on. But then, I suppose, for most readers the attraction of this book lies elsewhere - in the fact that it is a quick read whose lessons can be applied at once.
In general, I can highly recommend this book for the busy, time-poor manager who wants to introduce - or improve - risk management in his or her organization. It is the only concise guide available on performance benchmarking your risk management.
