Fans of pop culture will appreciate the many nods to (and sometimes even blatant pointing and yelling at) TV, SNL skits and cult classic films. The Perfume Alibi's most surprising element, to me at least, is how funny it is. With such serious business as murder, greed and lust on the table, one wouldn't expect to be laughing so much.
This is a wonderful debut for Cruden and I am eagerly awaiting his next book.
Now, that sounds chilling and ominous--and it is--but Cruden approaches the subject with a dose of humor and pop-culture lens. He takes the reader though a number of twists and surprises that keep you glued to the page. One of the big draws for me in any book is "readability." The voice Cruden writes with is warm and inviting--he speaks to the reader as if you're in on a joke together, making The Perfume Alibi immensely readable.
It's that tone and the juxtaposition of a lighthearted telling of a dark story that make it seem as if the story is being told for the screen...after all, what actor wouldn't jump at the chance to play a number of roles and motivations in the same film? It's a flick I'd pay to see.
Refreshing difference. You think you get to know the characters, but then you don't.
Cruden crafted a read that I would have to best describe as "engaging", because you try to figure out where it is going and then you are wrong.
Great writing with a plot wrapper and backstories, and backstories to the backstory, mixed in with a lot of pop-culture that makes it fun.
And credit to the author for writing a suspense novel that does not rely on heavy use of profanity, gore, or graphic sex. This story does not need that.
Well written I'll definitely read the next book by the author.
I bought the Kindle version because I didn't want to wait to receive the hard copy. I started it one afternoon and finished it the next morning. I just couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the series. What was in that briefcase? Jeffrey Cruden has a knack for suspense! I'd recommend this book to everyone who likes "on the edge of your seat" reading. Good going, Jeffrey!
