Arctander s book is the most important reference on natural fragrance materials. His understanding of the nuances of scented material is unequalled, and he knows how to convey those subtleties to the reader in comparison to odors with which the reader is already familiar. The sheer passion for natural perfume materials manifest in his description has more than once stimulated me to track down some rare and unfamiliar essence. I lean on his book for my own descriptions of the individual essences, and I recommend buying a copy of it for yourself. Reading his descriptions of natural essences and comparing them to your own impressions is a terrific way to broaden your aromatic palette and to learn about the nuances of scent. --Mandy Aftel, Aftelier Perfumes

You: "Hey Steffan, what can you tell me about Erigeron Oil?"
Steffan: "Oh, we usually called it Fleabane oil, and it was in low production because of [A]. Its liquid form is like [B] and it smells kinda like [C]. When it ages it become more [D]. I hope this helps."
You: Thank you again Steffan.
Steffan: "Just buy my damn book. I couldn't be bothered answering all your enquiries."
Although this reference book is dated, particularly when it talks about production. And it doesn't cover every niche ingredient, but it is still highly valuable.
There is an explosion in numbers of artisan natural perfumers worldwide. I truly feel that it would not be possible without this book. Every course of study, either individual, or in a class, is based on this volume.
It remains on my desk, close at hand, and I use it constantly. As my students receive their copies, they report that they are immersed in the details and descriptions, exploring the world of aromatics as never before, and feel that their studies are being taken to a much deeper level. They are. They are also inspired and transported, much in the way a fabulous perfume affects a person, which is wonderful to watch - a book that alters and sweeps someone up in its magic.
