Dr. Hope Allred is a likable heroine with a nice combination of smarts, vulnerability and savvy who does the right thing and gets the killer, even though it's at great personal cost. Couldn't put it down.
The “Peril Protocol” is medical treatment for meningitis that was created by Dr. Francis Peril. Hope Allerd is a doctor in training working with this protocol, along with a team of other student doctors. She believes in this procedure, and believes in this doctor. When evidence that the protocol does not work begins to surface, those who brought these findings to light are murdered, eviscerated and left to be found on the campus of the hospital. Soon it becomes obvious that everyone that threatens Dr Peril and his work is in grave danger.
Hope is blind in her devotion to Dr Peril, and suspects another fellow there at the hospital of the crimes. She takes in upon herself to investigate her suspect, hoping to find evidence to point toward the killer. Things begin to become even more complicated for her when someone from the doctor’s past appears trying to convince her of his guilt. But the truth is not so straightforward - Dr Peril’s past is a mess of knots that Hope has only just begun to untangle.
I’ll admit, I didn’t really get along with Hope. Frankly, I thought she came off as a bit of a brown noser and it made me not really connect with her. Her eagerness for any scrap of attention Dr. Peril threw her way really grated my nerves. I admire her determination, but facepalmed at her inability to see the truth until it was in front of her face.
Despite that, this story has good bones, if you get what I mean. The action is well done, and fast paced. I will be looking for other titles by this author in the future.
I found the synopsis to be a bit misleading. I thought the book would focus just on Hope, but it jumped around to too many different characters, most of which I didn't like, and had very short, abrupt chapters that made it hard to get into the story and connect with the characters. The mystery was fairly simple to solve though and took away from the suspense.
