Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The scope and qualities of this unique book are summed up better in its subtitle than in its title. While Dingle does little to explain the periodic table, he shows all the elements of the periodic table on a chart with very original graphics and spotlights 64 of the elements for closer examination on single pages or double-page spreads. Placed against a list including an element's symbol, atomic number, atomic weight, color, standard state, and classification, the element introduces itself in one, two, or three cheeky but informative paragraphs that focus on its qualities and uses. Each presentation ends with the element's date of discovery or earliest known use, its density, its melting point, its boiling point, and a digitally assisted color illustration with a distinctively Japanese, cartoonlike quality. The endpapers feature a glossary and an illustrated foldout poster of the periodic table. The quirky, idiosyncratic artwork and the unusual voice make this little book an appealing choice for introducing elements of the periodic table. Phelan, Carolyn

The reviews are spot on about the engaging characters and novel presentation of the Periodic Table. The series (we own several titles) has opened my children's eyes to science topics other than the ones they already liked. And because they read them over and over again, the books have deepened their knowledge and understanding of each topic. I think the method of this book is the game changer- it is FUN!

However, I disagree with the assertion (by a teacher and the editor- Ha Ha!- I am a chem engineer and homeschooling parent) that this book is for fourth graders and older. No, no, no. Let your interested 5 year olds page through the book and read every page they ask you to. Early exposure to science gives children confidence that they can study and understand these so-called difficult things. Let your child discover that she/he can do it!!! Learning about hydrogen today, oxygen tomorrow, and gold and neon next week is success. Encourage them. If you are unsure of the topic, learn with your child; discover the topic together; learn that you can do it. After you have read to them, tell them that they are learning the same information that is taught in first year college chemistry. That will be a wide-eyed, wow moment- enjoy it.

This book, and the series as a whole, has made my science reluctant 6 yr. old interested in technical topics. She realizes that science is fun, interesting, something she can do, and as fun as girly things like princesses- a big step at our house. She started with Basher's Biology because that was about cute things like animals and has since had the interest to read Physics, Astronomy, and the Periodic Table. My son read Physics and the Periodic Table first, because "those are serious topics," and has since discovered that Biology is also serious and, dare I say, interesting and not gross. I am ordering three more titles today.

My six year old is very fascinated with the elements (partly from the They Might be Giants song) and partly because he is a young science freak. This book is simple enough for him to understand and interesting enough for me to be happy reading it despite the fact it brings me back to having to retake chemistry in summer school. The visuals are very bold but seem to help him retain and remember the chemical symbols. The symbols are on the right hand corner of the page. Easy to cover and quiz.

This might be a slightly more entertaining way to help memorize and learn the elements for someone struggling to keep attention on studying them because if I find it even tolerable to read it has some entertainment value. Note that not all elements are really represented equally--some of the newer elements and less used elements are grouped together and given a page when iron is given a full page spread.

I love everything about every Basher book! I wanted a simple book to help me understand the periodic table better as I delve into the world of healthy eating and the chemistry behind the food we eat. The periodic table shows us the building blocks for every substance in the world and it's so nice to understand them and see how they fit into the bigger picture of life. This book is written in a simple and humorous style with great illustrations that are interesting to me as an adult and also to my three and five year old who enjoy reading it with me. My three year old son thinks all of the elements are superheroes!

We checked this book out from my seven year old son's school library earlier this month and read it through in just a couple of days. He was thrilled with the descriptions of the elements and how some were radical and others mischievous and like to cause trouble. For days he continually wanted to talk about how the elements did this or that and was describing them back to me. He went on and on about how much he would like the book until I promised him that he would get at least one science book for Christmas. He got this one and another that is more text book styled.

The phrasing of the book is completely geared toward bringing the elements to life. The elements each have a cartoon character type of symbol and a description of its properties. There is also a poster in the back of the book which I will have laminated for him.

Every time I look at this book I wonder why nobody thought to make chemistry exciting when I was in school. If you want to encourage a curious mind to learn more about chemistry and the world around them, this book is a very good place to start. We are also getting the rest of the series.

I bought this book for my fourth-grader who was interested in learning about the periodic table and elements. It is engaging and informative and a good way to start learning about this subject. Came with a pull out poster of the periodic table. (As you might imagine, it does not discuss each element but teaches about the groups on the table and then uses some examples of elements in that group.) We wish it had a little more information but it was a good starting place (touched on a wide array of topics -- metalloids, alloys, semi-metals, oxidation, etc) and was much more entertaining than many other books on these subjects. I would buy more books from this series.

My seven-year-old son's hero is Madame Currie... and after reading about her contributions to science and listening to our explanations about the different elements, he wanted to learn about the periodic table to study elemental properties. My search for a kid-friendly resource led me to this great book. He sleeps with it (he's a bit of a geek), and follows me into the bathroom reading aloud the characteristics of the "element of the day." We especially love the table/chart. Can't go wrong here -- if you are a parent hoping to inspire an appreciation for the complexities of our world, but don't want to inundate your wee folk with big-people-phrases and words, check this book out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basher science : The periodic table
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2013
I blame the quiz show "Pointless" for my purchase of this. I know very little science at all and my formal chemistry knowledge ceased when I was 13 - though I know a little from gardening and avoiding pesticides. I didn't even know what the periodic table was and the idea of elements like Vanadium seemed someone's idea of a joke - I thought Vanadis was a Nordic goddess. So I needed a straightforward, well set out, simple text which would tell me what was what and what did what. This book supplies it - and so much more. I really like the illustrations, it is well set out and the poster at the end is a bonus. Perhaps my having been a Children's Librarian helps with the recognition that many children's books provide an excellent foundation for more. I can't see it through a child's eyes but I don't think this is a children's book. It is for anyone who just wants to know!

My little boy is 5 and has a fascination for the Periodic Table. This explains about half of the elements in a fun and friendly way that makes it feel as if you are not really learning at all. The illustrations are 'Manga-esque' if thats the word and very appealing. The book as I have said, does not cover all the elements included in the table and I know some reviewers did complain about this, which is justified if you were using this a study guide for an older child. However for my son it is hardly a worry as there will be plenty of time to learn the rest later. The book is handily broken down into sections (metals, gases etc) and also includes a little poster to look at. Would also recommend 'Astronomy' by the same publisher.
