Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder
Turn your yard into a bird lovers' paradise. This Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder attracts everything from cardinals, doves, finches, flickers, and grackles to grosbeaks, jays, juncos, and kinglets--even sparrows, wrens, and woodpeckers. Best of all, this wild bird feeder provides an optimal feeding station for birds--without catering to those sneaky squirrels.
A charming addition to any outdoor space, this beautiful feeder features a durable plastic seed chamber, attractive metal caging with a powder-coated rustic brown finish, and ornamental leaves that are more than just decorative.
This feeder's innovative weight-activated exterior cage wraps protectively around the seed compartment. When a squirrel climbs onto the cage, the spring-loaded exterior cage drops down, throwing the squirrel off balance and lowering the ornamental leaves on the cage down into position where they effectively act as a barrier, covering the seed ports and preventing squirrels from pillaging the seed supply. Easy-to-access settings allow for adjusting the cage's spring tension as necessary.
This feeder's six seed ports nicely dispense bird seed, while its six bird-preferred, U-shaped metal perches allow birds to comfortably perch and feed. The bird's weight won't lower the cage, but when a squirrel climbs on, down it goes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the most popular bird seeds to use?
A. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.
Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Nyger (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyger won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.
Q. How do I clean my bird feeders?
A. Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
Remove all old seed.
Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
Scrub feeder and allow to air dry.
Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders.
Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled.
Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.
Q. What is the importance of providing water for wild birds?
A. Wild birds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need seed. Birds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also for bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide birds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for birds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy. By adding a water source, you also can attract a larger variety of birds to your yard. You may even attract more colorful birds that don't eat seed, but are in need of water!

The Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder features six feeding ports, U-shaped perches and holds 2 lb of seed. The interior seed tower is surrounded by rustic metalwork. The feeding ports have sturdy metal perches that allow birds to feed comfortably but, when the squirrels perch on them, their weight causes the entire metal casing to slip down, completely blocking the feeding ports and their access to the seed. The six perch/feeding station set-up, coupled with the anti-squirrel technology makes this feeder one of the most economical and convenient on the market! The clear, shatter-proof plastic reservoir makes it easy to monitor seed levels. Remember to clean your feeder once every two weeks with mild soap and water solution. Comes fully assembled with seed tray. Perky-Pet is the leading supplier of Wild Bird Feeders and Accessories. Perky-Pet Wild Bird Feeder models lure the bird in pursuit of seed providing you with hours of joy as random wild birds flock to feed at your house.

My biggest issue lately isn't with the feeder or the squirrels... it's a non-native bird called a Pin-Tailed Wydah (see photo, red beak, long tail feathers) who is exotic to look at but very territorial and runs off the other birds. The male Wydah makes a lot of noise and quite the display with his long showy tail (his body is small like a goldfinch), amusing for a while but I prefer the Finches and Nutmegs. I've taken to giving him a squirt with the hose and that seems to keep him away for a while so the finches can feed and chatter!
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We are sorry to learn that the squirrels were able to gain access to the seed. These determined critters can go to great lengths to get to the seed inside a feeder.
For best results, we recommend hanging a feeder 10 feet away from launching points such as fences, rooftops, decks, and branches. The feeder should also be positioned at least 5 feet from the ground. The addition of a baffler can also help to keep squirrels from easily landing on top of a feeder.

Edited August 2017: This bird feeder is now rusted and un-useable after only five months. The weight mechanism no longer works at all. It's very hard to get inside to clean, especially since the top barely wants to comes off now and the birds were never able to get the seed at the very bottom, so it attracted ants and mold. I would not recommend this feeder especially since it fails at its own name and fails to keep squirrels away.
Adding cayenne pepper (or similar) to the seed will usually deter squirrels. We also recommend any of the following measures.
- Install a baffler above the feeder.
- Place feeders at least 5 feet above the ground and at least 10 feet from the nearest launching point, such as trees and decks.
- Use safflower seed.
Our feeders are covered by a one year replacement warranty. Please give our Consumer Relations Team a call at 1-855-PERKYPET (1-855-737-5973) with additional questions.

The second issue is that I bought one of these over a year ago and another one more recently (that I returned) and it is a far inferior product from what I bought. The interior plastic housing used to be a sturdy plastic but that has been replaced with a very thin plastic that the squirrels easily bite through. Shame on the vendor (and maybe Amazon) for allowing this item to be sold as the same one that was sold a year ago.
Spend a bit more money and get a feeder that will last. It will end up costing you less in the end.
Truly you have an efficient and well constructed and designed feeder.
I HAVE SEVERAL OF THESE FEEDERS, AND ONE HAS LOST ITS' BTTM SEVERAL TIMES FEEDING GROUND FEEDERS. DRILED A HOE NEAR THE METAL BOTTOM AND INSERTED A THIN BUT LONG BOLT AND SECURED WITH A NON EDIBLE NUT. JUSTNA SUGGESTION IF ANY ONE ELSE HAS PROBLEMS WITH A FALLING BOTTOM.

This is easy to fill, has lots of feeding ports, and the birds love it. It's a great feeder.
