But there's an immediate difference you can feel when you hold or wear a pair of Persols versus Ray-Bans or Oakleys or other $100+ plastic sunglasses, and that's craftmanship. Where as the latter feel mass produced and unoriginal and, dare I say cheap, the Persols have a solid weight to them, an array of gorgeous details, and both a seemingly paradoxical blend of history/legacy and originality.
ESPECIALLY true for this model. The folding/hinge mechanisms are a demonstration of form and function - they look beautiful and perform solidly. These glasses are beautiful but do not feel flimsy at all.
I love even holding the small, palm-sized pouch containing my perfectly folded up pair of Persols.
The only thing I'm even slightly miffed by is that the narrowest model is still to wide for me - they will eventually slide down my face, or, worse, if I bend over, fall straight to the ground. However, that's nothing a leash like Croakies couldn't fix.
Additionally, I want to call out Amazon's spectacular customer service here. A third party seller accidentally sent me the wrong pair of sunglasses. Amazon went above and beyond to remedy the mistake. They not only told me to keep the other pair (also Persols, not cheap) but they refunded me the full amount so that I could place a new third party order for the correct pair. In this day and age, that was such a wonderful experience.
For the price I paid on here for my 714s which is what I have previously paid for Ray-Bans the quality is unbeatable. The frames are made of high quality acetate and the lenses are of excellent crystal. The folding element is interesting and makes them more compact for carrying/storage but it also creates a potential issue. If one isn't careful with folding them and putting the included cloth in between lens and frame, the sunglasses can damage themselves due to the sharp edges on some of the folding points. One other issue is the screws on the bridge that allow the folding action tend to be a bit loose and tightening them usually only works for a brief period before they are loose again.
But really those are the only cons. The 714s are very comfortable due to the "Meflecto" stem. The arms adjust to the wearers head and become quite easy to wear without sliding off the face. The Brown(non-polarized on mine)lenses do a good job of blocking rays but still keeping your field of vision bright with no warping/distortion.
After what I paid for these I will never again pay full price for a pair of ray-bans. I would not pay the full Persol retail of $350 or so for these because no pair of sunglasses is worth $350. After all they're just sunglasses. Having said that these are by far the best pair of sunglasses I have ever owned. I have received many compliments and even I think I look pretty damn cool in them.
