This is a fantastic collection mastered from the original analogue tapes. This double Cd collects 5 Ramsey Lewis live Albums 3 argo releases and 2 Cadet releaaes. Eldee Young and Red Holt provide the usual stellar in the pocket swinging rhythm section. Most know the In Crowd LP but this has so much more. Great 20 pages of notes , this is what US record companies should be doing , fantastic issue! Bring on more Chess jazz from the MCA vaults!

The LP "Live In Chicago" captured the Ramsey Lewis Trio at its pinnacle. Disc 1 of this collection brings that exuberant and melodic masterpiece back to life. This (rather than the album of that name) was "Ramsey Lewis' finest hour".

The tracks evidence Lewis' uncanny ability to pick crowd pleasing arrangements of what was then popular music to my generation. They also showcase his mastery of standards and swing numbers. I believe the turning point for the Trio came in 1965 when In Crowd was released. I recall that one getting a lot of airplay, along side the British invasion music, on our local station that catered to teens (WCAO Baltimore). After that point Lewis became more pop-oriented - and even more successful.

Lewis' arrangements of Hard Days Night and And I Love Her did those Beatles songs justice. His rendition of Little Walter's hit, My Babe, probably made Willie Dixon who wrote the song smile. I am sure since Chess was the label that the Trio recorded under at the time.

There are so many excellent tracks on this compilation that I would be hard pressed to pick favorites. Certainly In Crowd since it evokes memories of my teen years, along with Hang On Sloopy and Dancing in the Street. But, remember, I am a jazz snob, so there are many jazz standards that I could gush over as well. The best thing, though, is to ignore my favorites and listen to the sound samples. The real test of what is good and what it not - your own personal taste.

While the music spans multiple genres there is one constant: superb musicianship and arrangements that clearly show that Lewis had his fingers on the pulse of popular taste during the era in which these tracks were released. In fact, I am reasonably certain few will disagree when I say that they have stood the test of time and as enjoyable today as they were when they were recorded.
