I think the people who gave bad reviews just need to spend a little more time with it. It's not going to help you much if you don't understand the science behind it.

I received my cooling system today and have been wearing it for two hours (on a nasty Jersey summer day). I had to turn the fan to low because it was starting to get a little too cold. It's really comfortable (even on my fat neck). If you know what it feels like to have a cold towel around your neck, then you know what to expect from this product. The only difference is that you don't get wet (for the most part) and it STAYS cool for hours.

A couple things you should know before using this:

1. You need to let it prime on the first use. Keep adding water every couple of minutes to get the sponges nice and soaked.

2. Shake the excess water out once you fill it. If you don't shake it, prepare to get dripped on.

3. Keeping adjusting the collar until you can really feel the effect. This thing has a sweet spot, and I'm sure it's different for everyone.

4. Make sure you wear it UNDER your hair (if your hair is long).

I'm lucky to live in San Francisco so hot weather alone is not really an issue. But I also walk to work (about 45 minute up and down the hills between my apartment and office) and on warm or even slightly warm days I quickly get overheated. Rather than slow my walking pace or give up walking on these days I tried the personal cooling system.

I find it works extremeley well at keeping me from overheating. I am still able to enjoy my walk to work and arrive fresh and presentable at the office.

You do need to be carefull filling the unit. Water flows through when it is full and I recommend a good shake to get rid of any excess drops before putting it on. Other than that no issues at all. The batteries last a long time and the Neck Cooler itself is very durable. I am going on three years with mine.

Seems like a lot of the one star reviews are from people who think it's supposed to work by blowing cold air at you. And, because it doesn't actually do this to any real degree they concluded that it's fraudulent.

Being the son of an engineer naturally I opened the thing up when I got it. It's not an air conditioner, in the sense that it does not consume freon or use any sort of heat pump to generate the cooling effect. I suppose that could be considered false advertising, but the power requirements for a genuine portable air conditioner make that an impossibility, at least with the energy density of today's batteries.

How it works is something called the "swamp effect". When air is forced over a moist surface it dramatically cools the air, which in turn chills the metal plates contacting major arteries in your neck. That chills your blood, which has a (slight) cooling effect on your entire body. This is not as immediately satisfying as a soaked towel around the neck but if you bother to use it correctly and wait a bit for the effect to kick in, you'll notice that it does exactly what it says it will. If I could change anything, I'd add larger water resevoirs that would automatically rehydrate the sponges as they dry up.

And no, I don't work for Sharper Image. Just sticking up for this particular gadget as it's one of the few things they sell that work, and it got me and a roommate through a particularly miserable Summer back in '08.

I found this product to really helped me in hot weather when I wanted to do outside jobs like gardening.

But my husband teases me about spacey looks, and I certainly would not wear it outside my own yard.

Love it.

My dad bought one of these neck a/cs a decade ago and it only broke today because it snapped in my bag! That thing works great! He used it when resurfacing floors at work w/o a/c and I used it at the fair where i work selling tickets outside in July when its 95 degrees out! Yeah you need to refill it every few hours and shake it before you put it on to avoid dripping but it keeps you really cool!

I live in sizzling north Central Texas and do quite a lot of yard work. Of course I follow the shade as much as possible. I am not a youngster; approaching 60. I have a pretty good tolerance to heat but when it gets up over 100F and approaching 105-110, as it frequently does in the summer here, anything helps.

You can really tell the difference when you aren't wearing it or the water needs refilling. Although the air that goes through it is not driven by a powerful fan the inside silver surface that touches your neck is quite chilly. Did I say you can really tell that it works by taking it off in 100+ degree weather and trying to work without it!

I do believe the secret for more success, in my situation, is using the cooler with a cap that has a neck cape that covers the back and sides of my neck. I use a mesh type baseball type cap from SolarVeil.

[..]

I've tried putting chilled water in it but I don't think that makes any difference.

I've used it for 2 full summers now without approaching heat stroke, as I have in the past. Before I got this my husband came home one day as I was working in the yard and was so alarmed by my appearance that he insisted I immediately go in the house and that I not work outside any more in the hottest part of the day. I've now used it for two summers and have yet to have him insist I come in from the heat.

I took two of these down to the Yucatan Jungle for friends who live down there. It doesn't normally get as hot down there as it does in the hottest part of our summers but it is very humid which makes it seem hotter than the real temperature.

Sharper Image is not selling the Personal Cooling System at this time. The only place I have found it is on eBay.
