Although Gary was moody, there certainly was a sweet and kind side to him. I appreciate how Ms. Campbell exposed his internal struggles with his parents' relationship. I'm sure I would've felt the same.
With hints here and there of background stories, I just had to download the other stories!
If you're looking for a sweet romance you'll enjoy this story!

"Persuasion" by J. L. Campbell
I loved this sweet romantic coming of age story that dealt with Yolanda and Gary. It was quite interesting seeing these two opposites come together in a very dramatic read. Yolanda was definitely a stand your ground, sweet personality, with family issues [mistrust] while knowing what she wanted in her life and while Gary was one who could be sweet but quite moody [mean] also especially when it came to his 'internal struggles he had with his relationship with his father. As I read through this story I was able to better understand just why Gary acted the way he did as we find out why he had such anger issues. What will happen when the truths that had been held from Gary as a child are now revealed? By the end of this story will Gary and Yolanda be able to survive each other's misgivings as they try for a 'Persuasion' relationship? Who will be the one who did most of the persuasion? This novel is the third in this series in 'Sisters-in-Love and I loved how this author was able to catch the reader up with previous characters that added so much to the story. Even though this is a standalone read I would recommend that you read the entire series [Book 1 & 2 -Natasha's and Kelleigh's stories] to better understand a little more of what has gone on earlier in this series.
As for Persuasion, this young adult novel takes you on the journey between Yolonda and Gary. There is an age gap, that I appreciate was respected by Gary until Yolonda was able to reach "adulthood". It's not drastic but noticeable and adds to how and why the two interacted with each other the way they did. Each came with their own family "drama" one may say one more than the other. However, for Gary you see his struggles with his father, and how it shaped the man he had become. Sometimes as children all truths aren't revealed until later in life. Gary's truth came at a time when the family had to come together for his mother. Without giving away the particulars, you come to understand that withholding certain things from children may not be the best for said children.
As for Yolonda her "baggage" is rooted in mistrust. As she doesn't know how to take Gary. As he is Johnnie on the spot with helping her yet somehow her leariness makes her think the worst
As the two negate their way through this new found love, you come to understand that having a solid foundation based on friendship and trust, allows for love to bloom and withstand challenges and misunderstandings.
