From the manufacturer
There are many different types of ramps. The most common designs are bi-fold, tri-fold and free-standing. Ramps can also have different surface materials such as grip tape (with or without reflective markings) or carpet.
Why choose a free-standing?
Free-standing ramps do not need to be attached to a vehicle and are an excellent choice for large dogs as they can support extra weight without excess wobbling or bending.
Why choose a carpeted ramp?
Carpeting is great choice for pets with long nails, providing them with an extra gripping surface. It is gentle on your pet's paws as well as the inside of your vehicle when the ramp is being stored. The carpet tread is removable and washable for easy cleaning.
Why choose a reflective ramp?
Reflective ramps provide extra safety when loading and unloading your pet. The high contrast markings also aid in guiding your pet up and down the ramp.

I saw other reviews where folks put carpet or rubber mats on their ramps. I liked the idea of the rubber door mats - cheap, non-slip, and I can hose them off. We had a couple smaller ones, and they fit just about perfect. My son bolted them on, and with those, our aging 60lb dog was able to go up and down much, much better to get in and out of my SUV. It took some more coaxing, after her initial bad experience - but, she's getting the hang of it. She actually goes down it better than up it. I have to get behind her and sort of push her up it a little still. You may want to just plan on adding the mats or carpet, if you get this and avoid any trauma. I don't understand why they would use such a material that would hurt their feet, rather than some paw-friendly tread on these things in the first place. ?? :/
This ramp is tall enough that it allows the dog to step off the ramp directly onto the bed.
The carpeting on this ramp did not offer enough "grip" and the dog slid around a little bit (the ramp is quite long but it's still a steep incline/decline). We cut a piece of wall-to-wall carpeting to fit the length of the entire ramp, drilled holes through the ramp (it's made of plastic) & the carpet, and then attached the carpet piece to the ramp via bolts with large fender washers on the top to hold the carpet securely in place.
Perfection! The bolted-on wall-to-wall carpet remnant offers enough "grip" for my dachshund to walk up and down the ramp with no slipping in either direction. I'm very pleased with the result.
Every herniated disc flare-up the dog has increases the chances of permanent damage (including the loss of use of the hind end) and costs me $200+ at the veterinarian's office for emergency treatment with steroidal & pain medication. The cost of this ramp + the effort for the modification are a *bargain* by comparison!!!!
