I had seen this book before while browsing, and was attracted to the cover. I finally bought it for the "mouse mat for cat" pattern, the only pattern I have tried so far out of this book. The mouse mat came out even cuter than the pictures, and there are many more patterns inside that I want to try, including the ones on the cover! The book is bigger than I expected, with lots of color photos and some color charts, not just a leaflet. It has many creative patterns for things I didn't expect like a wire bird feeder, lilly pad decorations for your koi pond knitted out of plastic bags, and some knitted pets. Not just for dogs and cats, there are things in here for your hamster, bunny, tortoise, bird, or horse. The pictures of dogs modeling the anti-firework dog baclavas crack me up!

I bought this book for the Anti-Fireworks Dog Balaclava pattern, which, admittedly, is pretty far down there in the ranking of "practical knit items." (It is, literally, a balaclava knit for your dog, with knit "pompoms" added over the years, as if to protect them from the noise of fireworks.) And I haven't gotten around to making it yet. Most of the projects are pretty tongue-in-cheek, and make for a lovely, imaginitave, and witty, coffee table book, but a rather impractical pet knitting book.Projects include a hamster hut, a knit tent for your tortoise, a knit curtain with carrots for your rabbit hutch...again, remember I'm the lady who plans to knit her dog a balaclava, so I know I have very little room for criticism. Many projects seem needlessly complicated. In this case, you can judge the book by the cover: the two dog sweaters featured there are color work working from a chart. I can't see myself making any of the other patterns in this book except maybe the cabled dog sweater. Oh, and maybe the puppy carrier.

If you've ever felt your heart sink as you realise that it's taken the best part of a month just to knit the back of a sweater, this is a truly brilliant book. A witty assortment of knitted pet accessories which make ideal presents and will only take a few days to make. A sense of humour is rare in any craft book but this assortment of patterns is genuinely amusing - you'd have to have a heart of stone not to be amused by the hamster house or the tortoise tent. Some of the loopier designs are clearly just for fun but pony-mad little girls would adore the designer horse blanket and any chilly dog would be proud to be seen in the smart canine coats. Football fanatics can even knit up football shirts for their hounds. A welcome change from cuddly-wuddly or arty-crafty knitting books.
