When I first got this last year, I stood at the nearest open window, pointed it at the dogs and pressed the button. The dogs would stop for a second, then go on barking. Later, however, I started saying "hush!" first, then pressed the button only if they kept barking. This proved to be far more effective, and by the end of that first summer I often only needed to loudly whisper "hush" and the barking stopped. I noticed that this summer, they are barking much less on their own, and still respond well to me just saying "hush".. I'm glad this works, since I feel it is only fair to give the dogs a warning. It's not their fault their owners leave them "abandoned in the yard all day (and never walk them).
Highly recommended, but note that it has a limited effective distance.
She didn't like it, but I think the main thing is that she finally understood that barking was bad, and she really wants to please. So she was pretty easy to train. She needs a reminder every once in a while, but she's much, much better now. After watching how quickly it worked for her, it seems like maybe some dogs think they're "supposed" to bark, to protect their owner, or they bark for fun and no one told them not to. Anyway, the nice thing about the "beeper" is that I can do it silently, while the neighbor is there, without causing an awkward confrontation (he's really very, very nice, just doesn't tell his dog NO).
So, 5 stars! It saved our relationship with our neighbor, and our sanity! I misplaced our first one so I'm ordering 2 more, so I always have a backup.
I had ordered three other varieties in this price range, and this is the one we like best. The ones that "automatically" go off when the dog barks seem to "sound off" too randomly for the dog to associate it with his behavior, or to understand that it means "stop that behavior". Another trigger style (looked like a yellow gun) didn't work at all. I had decided to try the inexpensive ones before buying a $100+ version, and I'm glad I did!
