The K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat
Can be used year-round!
The K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat is an affordable solution to owning a heated sleeping mat for your furry feline. Using only 6-watts of power, this incredibly comfortable bed has a dual thermostat heater buried beneath its soft foam, creating a cozy napping place for cats. This Thermo-Kitty Mat comes in a standard size of 12.5inch x 25 inch.
Also available in a larger size is the K&H Thermo-Pet Mat which measures 14 inch x 28 inch and has all of the same benefits as the Thermo-Kitty Mat. Both are available in a Sage or Mocha color, are MET listed and have removable covers for washing. These mats are a convenient size and fit almost anywhere. Your pet will enjoy indoor comfort year-round. Both cats and dogs love them! This product comes with a 1 year limited warranty.
The Secret Behind It All
The secret to this pet bed is its surface which will remain at 12 to 15 degrees above the ambient air temperature. As you pet lays down on it, it begins to warm to the animal’s normal body temperature making for a happy kitty or dog.
How to Test Your K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat
You can test your K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat by placing a large pillow on top of it. After about 20 minutes, feel under the pillow. It will feel warm, not hot. Do not use an extension cord during this test.
The surface of the bed will be about 15°F above ambient air temperature until the pet lies on the bed. Then it will warm to about 102°F, which is the natural body temperature of dogs and cats.
Care Instructions: Unplug and remove the internal Pet Bed Warmer. Remove the cover and wash it on the gentle cycle with cold water. Line dry or use the no-heat cycle on your dryer.

The K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat is an affordable heated sleeping mat with a dual thermostat heater buried beneath soft foam to make a comfortable napping place for cats. The surface temperature of the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat will remain 10-15 degrees above ambient air temperature when not in use by the pet. The product is designed such that the surface will only warm to full temperature when the pet is on the mat. As a simple test, you may place a pillow on top of the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat - after about 15 minutes the under-side of the pillow should feel warm, but not hot. This is the warmth that your pet will feel when lying on the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat.

As soon as the mat arrived, I plugged it in, confirmed that it making heat, and set the cat on it. The cat did not move for two days. She barely gets up to eat. I'm sleeping alone, and my lap is always empty. Unconditional love? Hah!
It does not appear to generate heat until you press the foam cushioning. If you're a cat, you can accomplish this easily by walking or lying on it. :) I believe it acts as an insulator otherwise. This should reduce waste heat when the cat is not on it, but some cats may not be impressed, what with their short attention spans and all. Once you're pressing on it, it generates what I would describe as the "perfect level" of warmth. (My cat would probably want it scalding hot, but I couldn't stand the smell of burning hair, so it's for the best.)
The heater insert is less than 6" wide, so it does not get warm all the way across its 12.5" width. It does get warm from end to end down the middle. The product would be improved if the entire pad got warm. I could probably fit two warming strips side by side and heat the entire surface of the pad... is fire safety an issue here?
Heater insert width notwithstanding, my cat says I should give it 5 stars, so I have.
Updated Update: it's two years later (bought around Christmas of 2009, reviewed in Jan 2010, it's now Dec 2011). My kitty spent the entire two years on this heating pad, so I think it still gets 5 stars. My kitty "passed on" over the break :( but before that she had time to compare versus the "K&H Pet Bed Warmer" (13w 11x24) and "Petmate Indoor Pet Heating Pad Element" (30w 10x20). She preferred the larger K&H because she could sprawl out more, but the Petmate was too hot. Note that she was anemic at the end, so it is interesting that she did not like the warmer pad.
I have recently adopted a new, younger test subject...er I mean kitty, who is currently evaluating the K&H 11x24 pad.
Feb 2014 update: My new kitty is still using the 13w 11x240 K&H heating element, installed in this mat, and it's a high priority choice when laps or direct sunlight are not available. So I guess there's bonus points for long term reliability here. :)
But when I purchased this Thermo-Kitty mat, I had NO IDEA that it also served as an induction charger! Giselle, pictured here, has always needed frequent recharging, and charging times on sofa cushions, my bed, my lap, or my chest -- especially the latter two-- could seem to take forever, especially since she's put on a few ounces lately. But now that she's found this mat, she's a new cat! She still needs to recharge frequently, and the mat hasn't eliminated the need for other power sources (treats, canned food, that sort of thing) but she's full of energy now (when she wants to be). Just be sure you have the toys ready when your cat is fully charged.
As with most cat gifts, I would think your mileage may vary. We have two cats, neither one is very interested in this despite our apartment being super drafty. They'd rather hop up on the couch and sit on a blanket (or a human). Hard to knock the product when it works, but in terms of cat enthusiasm this is 0-2 in my house.
