OK, so scrolling through the reviews here there are endless 1-star, "the battery dies in a month reviews". No kiddin! We saw it the first, second, third, fourth, etc... Time! I had a Petsafe collar with a red blinking light... I took out the Petsafe battery and figured out what needed to be done to replace it within a minute, so can you. When you remove the battery, the positive terminal (silver top of the battery with a "+" on it) will have a plastic ring around it that holds the battery in the holder. If you look carefully, you will see a couple of tabs and a seam that runs around the top lip. Just use a small screwdriver, or pocket knife to pry this ring off. It will break off...No matter - it was only glued on to begin with. Now get a pair of needle-nose pliers and grab gently along the side of the battery (where metal is exposed on the sides)... It may take a tiny bit of force to pull out, but it came right out for me. Now install a new Sanyo (or other brand) CR-1/3N battery (I picked one up at WalMart for $3.OO) by pressing it back in. You don't need to worry about gluing anything, it will hold just fine and will be that much easier to remove next month when it dies again. Now plug that joker back in and you're GTG. Petsafe makes a great product, but they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to sell this battery off as proprietary - BS!! Good Luck!

The Petsafe RFA-188 can be DIY replaced by opening up the bottom cap. It is glued so you'll have to use a plier. Underneath it you'll find a Sanyo CR-1/3N battery that can be purchased online for 3 dollars. I plan on buying a bunch in bulk to make shipping worth it, slap it in and use some glue or tape to put it back together. To find the inner Battery, just google it.

This is what it looks like but you can find it cheaper elsewhere on the internet.

Following advice from other reviewers, I took the module apart and removed the battery. I'm not a handy person but there was nothing to it. I just ordered six replacement batteries online for less than what Petsafe charges for two. Considering how fast they burn out, buying them for my two cats from petsafe would cost me over $100 a year. This way it will be less than $35.

Thanks W. Jiang for the idea! My husband just replaced the inner battery of this Petsafe RFA-188 battery with a Duracell 1/3N battery found in our small town local hardware store for $4.00! He said he broke off the seal holding the old 1/3N battery and popped in the new one without tape or glue. We love the Petsafe Little Dog Receiver but after reading all the reviews about how fast the batteries died, I was a little concerned. We turn the batteries (2 dog collars) off at night and back on during the day and the first collar lasted about 2 months. Replacing the battery every 2 months at $4.00 a pop is, in my opinion, no big deal. What freedom for us and our 2 dogs!

I use this battery for a dog collar from PetSafe. The first time I used the battery and it went dead within a month I just replaced it thinking it was a bad battery. The second one went dead in about a month as well. I wrote an e-mail to PetSafe and they said that was about right. They said the collar was meant as a training device only. The problem is that I have a very smart dog and when his batter goes dead he knows because the hidden wire no long makes his collar click and he goes running into the street. $9 a pop for the replacement batter makes this collar pretty expensive. It owuld have been cheaper to build a fence.

I put in a cat fence last summer and training took approximately 3 weeks, after which I changed the batteries on both cat collars. Since then - 6 months ago - I've not had to change them again. Firstly, the cats only wear the collars when they go out - they don't have them on all the time. Secondly, I turn the collars off when they're not in use (that once-a-minute green flash takes a lot of battery-power over time). Thirdly, when I turn them back on, they frequently (about 60% of the time) seem to be dead because the red flash doesn't appear. But I've found that if you take the key and turn the battery pack all the way to the right (past the "OFF" position until the line is in the 3 o'clock position), wait ten seconds and then turn it back to the on position, it will typically start working again. Failing that, take the battery out and rub the contact points in the collar and put it back again. If I changed the batteries every time the lights didn't flash, I'd have changed them once a week. As it is, they've worked pretty well for me - and I know at least one of my cats frequently tests the boundaries!

I purchased a "little Dog" radio fence from Petsafe and the fence is excellent, but the "little dog" collars are eating up batteries. The collars nice and small but if I get 3 weeks from one of these batteries then I am lucky. DO NOT BUY the little dog collars!

It is bad enough that the battery only lasts a month, instead of 3 as advertised. But, Petsafe intentionally put an ordinary, over the counter battery in a proprietary holder so that you as the customer would be compelled to buy a replacement from them at almost ten dollars a piece. On top of that, they charge $10 for standard shipping, when it should cost under a dollar for first class mail for such a tiny item. Don't pay the 500% profit to these rip-off artists and do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes cracking open the housing and replacing the battery yourself for little under $3. I will not buy from Petsafe again because of their greed and gouging.
