My husband and I needed to find a solution to prevent our cat from waking us up at 4:30 in the morning for her breakfast. We were very happy to find this automatic pet feeder! We haven't been using it all that long but so far, it's been great for us. Our cat is still getting used to it but we've seen a difference already with how she doesn't wake us up that much. It has 5 different chambers to put food in which is great for portion control since we have our cat on a diet. The feeder was very easy to program with the times we wanted the next serving of food available. When it's the next feeding time, the dish part of the feeder rotates and the next portion is available. The feeder requires 4 D size batteries which are not included. We plan to always have some around for when the time comes that we need to replace them. We could've opted for the 2-meal feeder but we wanted to make sure our cat wouldn't figure out how to open the feeder. For us, spending a few more dollars on the 5-meal feeder was well-worth it. The price we paid was AMAZING! If this feeder continues to work this well for a long time, it will be such a good investment for us. Plus, it means we get a little more sleep! I highly recommend this pet feeder to anyone with a pet who wakes them up earlier than they want to be up!
***Update 09/02/2016 - We have had this pet feeder for well over a year now and it's still working great. We switched our cat from two meals a day to four smaller meals and this feeder accommodates our needs perfectly. I was easily able to switch the times so our cat's food is ready in six-hour increments. The feeder has been durable even with our curious twin toddlers poking at it and it's still in great shape. I still believe the five-meal feeder is the best one that suits our needs since we have more flexibility and it allows us to easily change up our cat's feeding schedule without purchasing a new feeder. I still highly recommend this feeder.
My only complaint so far is that while trying to figure out how to set the time and feeding times I switched it to 24hr time and cannot figure out how to get it back to 12 hour time. Not a big deal but something I thought should be in the instructions but wasn't.
This works great so far! He recognizes the sound of the motor and goes jogging into his room to get his meal. I put 1/8 cup portions in 4 of the reservoirs, and set the timer for 6am, noon, 6pm and 11:30pm.
The feeder saves the programmed times, so I don't have to reprogram each day. I didn't find it hard to program; instructions were fine. The dish rotates in a clockwise motion. It stays locked in place, and the dish doesn't turn if he paws at it.
-HE HAS STOPPED CONSTANTLY BEGGING FOR DRY FOOD FROM ME. This is the best part. He sees the feeder as his food source instead of me. No more following me around whenever I'm home. No more waking me up early in the morning. Sweet relief.
-I have complete control over portion size
-He can't get it open
-Doesn't have unnecessary bells and whistles
-When I open it, I can see that he ate all of his food, and I can see that the device worked correctly and distributed it as it should have (some auto feeders have large hoppers and you put in 10 days worth of food, but there remains the question of whether the device was consistent with portions or not. Some reviewers complained of this. There's no real way to be sure it distributed the correct amount of food if you're not home to check.)
-This is an issue only for me, but I can only put one day's worth of food in it. Other customers could do 5 days, fill each reservoir all the way up and have it operate once a day. But for my circumstances, it has to be refilled every day. If I had a hopper type feeder, I could do multiple days. But then there is still the inconsistency question about portions.
-Battery only? Size D? 4 needed? Seriously? Very, very few timed feeders on the market even have the option of using a power cord. That is crazy to me. Batteries are expensive, so the true cost of this is more like $35 + $12ish for batteries over and over for however long those last. You can use rechargeable batteries, but I don't have any currently, so that is another $50 or something to get those with a charger. At that point, I could buy a $99 feeder with AC power and not be any worse off in my pocket book, nor worried about recharging batteries or if the batteries die while I'm away. It's just nonsense.
I'd pay $60-70 for this if it had a power cable.
I deducted 1 star for no power cable option. But otherwise, this suits our needs pretty well. I took a video, but I don't see an option for posting it with this review, only photos.
