SECOND UPDATE! August 2016. Contacted Petsafe at 1-800-732-2677 - Matt walked me thru cleaning the motor in a white vinegar solution - very easy. I will be finishing that process and trying again. It should be good to go. Makes sense - it is IN water 24/7 so it will develop scum and yuck. Cleaning very often is a must. Not too much to ask, in my opinion.AUGUST 2016 THIRD FINAL UPDATE! - Finally - I spoke with another great service person at Petsafe. Turns out, I do not need the charcoal filter at all. My water is already filtered and the cause of the problems was this filter. I took it out of the plastic housing (you do need the housing for it to work) and I have had zero problems. The motor was never the issue. Works like a charm.
I purchased the foam filters and charcoal filters in bulk which saved $.
My only complaint is the internal plastic container for the charcoal filter. It's hard to clean the crevices inside, but not impossible. The point of a ceramic fountain is to avoid the plastic, but it's not a deal breaker. I'll likely purchase extra internal plastic containers for when the time comes that cleaning the plastic doesn't work.
My kitten did NOT take to the fountain right away but with some patience we worked it out. To get him used to it I started off w/the bowl w/water in his eating area for a week or so. Then I added the center piece without the motor for another week/s. Then I put the motor in. However I found he didn't like the noise the water made when it goes into the bowl. [He loves to drink from the faucet w/running water but this bothered him?! Only a cat '] I personally found the water sounds of the fountain pleasant, relaxing & non intrusive.
<*The Silencing of the Water*>
To accommodate my kitten's preference, I created all kinds of contraptions to make the water quieter w/mixed success. I tried plastic rings cut from a cup to slow the water down, foams, cheese cloth wrapped around, etc etc. I looked over reviews, scoured the Internet for hacks. I even contemplated getting a small amount of oven friendly clay to make a custom ceramic piece to place over the little spouts! But then I found out there's no truly food friendly ceramic unless you use a kiln and have special (expensive) coating gloss...it got too complicated.
Eventually what worked was good old fashioned Scotch tape blocking each spout so that the water flows over all the sides of the top. But I wasn't satisfied with needing to change the tape & it didn't sit well with me my kitten water flowing over Scotch tape day after day.
Of course the solution is almost always the simplest. I ended up adjusting the center piece so it wasn't flush with the fountain. I've included pictures. It takes a little finagling and practice, but I eventually silenced the water after my 3 month journey & kitty is happy with his fresh water.

We tried many bowls in different sizes and shapes to solve this problem, to no avail. We then tried a drinking fountain for cats. It worked great for our cat by keeping her tags out of water. However, we got increasingly uneasy because the fountain was made of plastic albeit BPA-free. Also, we didn't like the access to water got cut off in case of a blackout. So we kept looking for a better solution.
After lengthy online search, I found this stoneware pet drinking fountain by PetSafe at a fantastic price (Black Friday or Cyber Monday Sale?). The price was WAY too good to resist, so we decided to give it a shot even though there were a few negative user reviews citing poor-quality pumps.
We've been using this stoneware pet drinking fountain for almost 3 weeks and couldn't be happier!
The waterfall is noisy but we found it rather soothing than annoying as the pump motor is quiet. If you find it too loud or disturbing, place it out of earshot (we have ours on a timer so that the flow stops during the night). I'm cleaning the pump each week as instructed but have not yet seen any hair or debris in it. I noticed some fine black speckles in the base during the first few days assuming they were from the charcoal filter. No chemical odour to speak of. The pump doesn't seem so poorly made in comparison to that in our first cat drinking fountain, but I'm no expert here. This product comes with a 3-year-warranty. If the pump fails, I'm hoping it'll cover it.
We're very happy with this drinking fountain because: (1) it's made of pet-safe material -- stoneware/ceramic; (2) has an attractive appearance; (3) doesn't cut off access to water during a blackout; (4) prevents our cat from dragging her tag into the water; and (5) our cat seems to enjoy drinking from it.
The only demerit to using a plain water bowl is that it's not easy to know/measure how much water our cat consumes each day. If this fountain offered some way to do so, this product simply would be awesome.
Like others say, it's pretty loud, but the sound is just running water, so that's pretty inoffensive. The fountain uses filters, but apparently can run without them, and Amazon has replacement ones for pretty cheap; there also is a foam filter that surrounds the pump to keep hair and debris out of it which is a nice touch - again, you can buy replacements easily.
I also use only R.O. water in it as our tap water would kill it fast.
I enjoy hearing the water flow and the cats are very impressed! Good buy.
IT IS NOW FEB 2017, and the pump has stopped working, very disappointed, cannot find anything on warranty, and a new pump is 25 dollars with tax, that doesn't include shipping.
Update you have to replace the charcoal filter or the motor gets clogged. They are not expensive and it works like new when you replace it.
