- it is narrower than an actual sliding door. This causes gapping which can be resolved with insulation. But it doesn't end there.
-if your sliding door has a useful lock, this will make that inoperable. I ended up using something to fashion a hole in the edge so that the lock could still work, but because the panel is designed to meet the sliding door and it isn't completely flush, the lock is exposed, which I take care of with the following.
- you will have gaps that will take some ingenuity to block. The main one being where the sliding door meets the panel. I ended up taking a 1.5 inch wide aluminum strip, drilling holes and using spacers to attach to panel to cover the gap. Then I used insulation under said strip to reduce loss of energy. This actually made it look a lot better. Covered the gap, created space for more insulation, and prevent the lock from being exposed.
-I took a picture with an infrared camera and you can see the energy loss from the whole panel.
-petsafe should have made this thicker, insulated more, and put two window panes. Also added a piece of aluminum that can be used to cover the gap and also made the panel able to still use the lock.
It is a great idea but I would have paid $50 more to have something more substantial.
If PetSafe sees this, I'm happy to offer some advice, provide additional pictures etc...

I had to remove it once the weather got colder (but only around 40-50 degrees) because my whole basement was so cold that it screwed up the heating in my whole house and our energy bill was going insane. Besides the door being non-insulated, with the door partially opened, you have cold air coming through the sliding glass door and the other glass. I tried several things to insulate so that we could make it work, but no amount of foam sealers, plastic insulation or anything else I did helped.
It actually was fine in the first month or 2, but once December came, it had to be taken out. If you don't really get cold weather, then this is fine, but I am going to need a better solution.
He also wouldn't do it on his own for a couple days. He would go to the door and wait to go in our out until we told him.
The only negative is the sizing on the larger end. Our dog is about 90 lbs and the door is a bit of a tight fit. For him to get through without banging or dragging the sides, he needs to go very slow. I mean, it works, but even I see if we had gone with the XL door, that unit is only TALLER. I wish they made a size that was just a bit wider.
Use the measuring guide and you should be ok. My dog is actually about exactly at or maybe a half inch wider than the width of the L door and it works...but not without a little bit of tightness (which also makes the door get a bit hairy as it works like a brush in his fur when he squeezes through)
All in all, we love it.
-one caveat: it defintiley cuts down the interaction with your dog. We finally got it because kids are in high school now and with sports and school and activities, we are never sure who is going to be home when. This solved that problem for sure! BUT, on a busy day, the dog coming over and getting your attention to go outside, or barking at the door and coming in happy to see you...that kind of goes away. Now that the dog and the children are all independent, you realize if they don't need something from you, they pretty much ignore you. It does take a way a little bit of relationship time. On the other hand, since this door has gone in and the kids have their drivers license, I get a lot more done around the house. (And by that, I mean, I don't do anything around the house.)

My only complaints would be that the white color costs 40% more than beige version :).
Also, the magnet at the bottom of the door isn't quite strong enough to shut after pet passes through, it stays slightly open. I wish the pet door wasn't all rubber firmly attached at the top, but had a hinge at the top so it could swing shut fully. Every time my pet goes in or out I have to get up and nudge the door shut with my foot. That being said, I can probably fix this issue DIY, so it doesn't factor in too heavily, also there are many replacement options to get another pet door, which I probably will do.

Recommended temperature does say only as low as -18'C, and I think that would be pushing it. That said, it will be easy enough though to take this down for next winter, and we will because it's definitely not energy efficient (it is currently hovering around 0, and you can definitely feel the cold air at the opening and around the frame). If you are looking for something year-round and you live in a climate that is much below freezing, you would be better off with a proper all-season pet door.
The biggest negatives of this product (and the main reason for the loss of stars) is that the rubber strip that is meant to keep the cold out from having the main glass door partially open is garbage. Within a few minutes of placing it along the door frame, the rubber separated from the adhesive. Totally useless... and you DO need something there to keep heat/cold out or in and to keep bugs out. I duct taped it on for now, and will be looking to replace it with some alternative form of weather stripping.
Also, the panel is narrow and butts up to your sliding glass door. This means that it does connect to the screen door... you'll have a gap of a couple inches... so if you live in a buggy area and would like to have your glass door open for airflow and your screen door closed to keep bugs out, you'll need to rig up some way to close off that gap. If you are handy, a narrow board attached to the frame will do the trick, but just be prepared for that little complication unless you are lucky enough to live somewhere without mosquitoes!
