More than 5 million dog owners have found the secret to stress-free walks. The Gentle Leader Head collar stops pulling, lunging, jumping and other unwanted behaviors with immediate, gentle control. Unlike traditional collars, the Gentle Leader places pressure on the back of the neck instead of the front of the delicate throat, preventing choking and coughing. The nose loop allows you to direct your dog's head in the direction you want to go. Most dogs quickly learn to stop pulling and start paying attention to you during walks.

*** WATCH THE DVD FIRST & FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PROVIDED! This is not a "just put it on your dog and away you go" product in some/most cases. You need to train your dog to get use to the leader and work w/ them!
One note that the trainer said would be an issue: she hates it. She hates putting it on, I should say. It doesn't stop her from freaking out when it comes to walk time, though. And my plan is, once she's at a plateau of either there or almost there, to start a walk with the GL and then switch the lead to the front leader harness. The reason is I don't want our walks to be training sessions for all of her life, and I want to train her to respect the harness, too. She still wears a traditional collar for her i.d. tags and license, but I only attach a lead there as a last resort. Her trachea was obviously being damaged by pulling. I've had dogs all my life. I've noticed that dogs seem to have no notion of: "gee, that's choking me. I guess I won't do that." No clue why. None. Dogs just have freakishly focused focus, and choking? No deterrent, and not a workable training method.
The front-leader harness and the Gentle Leader require patience and stamina. But I know they work. A man who has had dogs all his life, and has four now, repeatedly remarked on how well behaved my pittie mix was at 9 months. And she was standing beside a group of people with her lead attached only to her collar. I thought she was being a pest, but he gave me encouragement and patience with those words. I'm really very proud of her, and, frankly, I'm kind of proud of myself for finding the day-after-day patience to repeatedly and gently but firmly correct her, reminding myself, she's big, but she's only 10 months old. My dog trainer said dogs can learn at any age. And if puppies can learn best, then I can keep being patient. And the Gentle Leader is a great help.
UPDATE July 15, 2017 My dog still wears this. She is STRONG and she is tall. With any other leash, I can't be sure I've got control enough to keep her from jumping up to say hello to strangers. After about 30 or so minutes of walking, I can usually remove the lead, attach it to her vest, and then remove the head collar - all very easy to do, but don't take the head collar off first! - and have a more pleasant-for-her walk for the last 30 minutes. For shorter walks, the Gentle Leader stays on always.
I'll say, again, don't yank hard on the lead. You have control of your dog's head - don't take a chance on hurting them. Twitch it if you have to to get their attention. Do not risk injuring your dog by yanking or pulling hard on the leader.
In the "for what it's worth" category, I'll tell you I've come to place almost no value on a collar except as something to hold a tag. This leader and a padded vest are my dogs' apparel. I've had dogs for years - all my life - and they all seemed to get bad coughs that never went away after one too many sudden, playful attempts to chase a squirrel while I had my leash attached to their collar. Something bad is happening there, and leashes, in my opinion, should not be used to control dogs, at least not until they've been ... no ... They just shouldn't. After they've been trained, a vest is the safest, properest way to "dress" a dog. My dogs wear Chai's Choice Pet Products 27"-32" Best Front Range No-Pull Dog Harness, Large, Orange. They lose some hair under their arms, but the vest is padded and neither dog seems pained by the hair loss.
