I bought a bunch of wooden stakes from Home Depot and went to work building the area. I first went and staked out the entire area I was wanting to fence in. I then went and placed the wire around the stakes. I then added the flags, plugged it all in, and put the collars on. It worked for about three months. Then all of a sudden my little dog was out of the yard constantly. I ran out and instantly bought new batteries assuming that’s the issue. Nope. Tightened the collar. Nope. Upped the strength. Nope. Everything looks fine. No breaks in the wire. Collars beep when I test it. However, it can no longer keep my dogs in the yard. Waste of money for it to stop working after three months. I’m going to call customer service tomorrow and see if they can offer any advice but this sucks that it happened during a holiday week while we are all sick.
1) Dogs are different. The Huskies are smart and persistent with a thigh prey response. The collars work about 80% maybe. GPS collars as a backup have proven helpful although costly. The Golden/Chow is 100% fence compliant.
2)Splices in the wire loop are a weak point for breakage and water penetration. Securing wire tightly to other fences can cause stress due to expansion and contraction in metal or wind motion if less rigid structures are used. Use the heaviest wire you can afford. Soldered splices in shrink tubing would be great but mostly not possible. Wire nuts with waterproofing (liquid tape) and a additional wrap of tape holds up. Petsafe supplied “caps” deteriorate after 5 years. I also tried crimp connectors but these were not reliable. Critters and livestock break the wires at some point whether buried or tied to fence wire. Settling earth also stresses buried wire especially under driveways. Bury in PVC conduit and allow some slack in the wire. 1/2” Drip Irrigation tube works to protect in garden areas where you might be doing light digging around plants.
3) Collar unit is pretty durable and waterproof but get a heavier collar (1” width available). Plastic snap gets broken by active dogs. Hard to find the collar in 3 acres of vegetation when it comes off.
4) This will be my third replacement Model 300-1310 transmitter. Original was blown out during a lightning strike. Seriously for the cost of this unit they didn’t design in surge protection and fuses!?! Petsafe cost for a surge protection unit is ridiculous. Aftermarket has worked fine. The second unit seems to have an electronic failure with incorrect random open loop alarms. A real pain to troubleshoot (even with electronic testers and physically inspecting thousands of feet of wire and splices with escaped dogs to be re-contained. Reliability and product robustness is not all it could be.
In Summary, when working, it works OK depending on your dogs. It is pricey on the start-up and the maintenance and troubleshooting time can be annoying. Maintenance cost for replacement batteries, lost collars and failed transmitters over the long term is a cost consideration. Aftermarket suppliers offer some relief here. Petsafe could really offer more help in this regard. When I have contacted Petsafe for customer support they have always been quick to reply and offered helpful suggestions regarding problems. Suppling reasonably priced replacement parts - not so much. So in my case, it is functional and no better alternative that I have found. It offers some measure of insurance rather than hunting down escaped dogs or worse yet having to think about replacing lost, stolen or fatally injured pets.

We have followed the training instructions for the past 2 weeks, but nothing works. The static correction only works "sometimes" and randomly. And the beeping does the same thing. The manual says that there is a "run-through" prevention but it does not work. In the places that the static correction does work often, when my dog runs through it does nothing.
Luckily my dog has done well with the training, and stays in the play area when cars, family, or people walk by. The only except is when he sees another dog or a bike. He runs through the boundary and does not receive a shock. Even though there is a "safe re-entry" feature the collar still shocks my dog as he comes back into the play area.
We are not happy at all with this product and these last 3 weeks have been a waste of time. I'm calling to get my money back.
