The Premier Collar "Your Dog's Neck's Best Friend". With a leash or with your hand, the Premier collar tightens to give greater control and reduces the risk of escape. Because it offers limited closure, it's safer than a traditional choke collar . Unlike other collars, the measurement taken for the Premier Collar is at the top if the neck directly behind the ears. This corresponds with the size of the collar in the closed position, so it is not necessary to add inches. For example if your adult dog measures 14-inch directly behind the ears, choose a medium collar. Sizing recommendations 5-inch - 8-inch Petite, 8-inch - 12-inch Small, 10-inch - 16-inch Medium, 14-inch - 20-inch Large, 18-inch - 28-inch Extra Large. Once you've selected the proper size, simply place the larger opening over your dog's head. Adjust to fit by pushing the nylon through the slide. When tightened with a leash or by grasping the smaller nylon loop like a handle, the two metal rings should touch directly behind your dog's ears. Attach tags to these rings rather than the D-ring. The smaller nylon loop will lie flat after few days of wear.

The only issue I had with the collar was around the edges where it is sewn together. Most of the edges seemed kind of sharp. It felt like it was scratching my hands when I pet near the collar, although it never seemed to bother my pup. After a few days, I took a lighter and melted down all the edges a little. Problem solved. I've added some pictures to illustrate the area where I melted it down.
We've been using this collar for about 4 months now and it is holding up great.
Note: Ignore the silver ID tag attached to the collar in the photos. That did NOT come with the collar.
One thing in common about all 3 of my dogs (2 Pit bulls, 1 Greyhound/Shepherd mix) is that they have small faces and wide necks.
Normal collars they can slip out, or back out of.
The Martingale Petsafe collar they call a 'NO SLIP COLLAR' because they can't slip out of the collar when leashed.
The Animal Shelter I Volunteer at uses Petsafe Martingale collars for every Medium to Large dog, because it is such a good brand and you don't have to worry about losing a dog when you take it for a walk.
I recommend the 1" COLLAR not the 3/4. In my experience, the 3/4 with bigger dogs folds up and just doesn't work as well.
****Also please do not leave your dog unattended at home alone with this collar on.*******
Take it off your dog when you come inside. I've heard it can be a strangulation problem.
My Puggle is still learning the proper way to walk on the leash and has a tendency to strain at the end sometimes. With the chain choke collar she would be choking herself but with this collar it tightens up and becomes uncomfortable but with the wider webbed design it doesn't start cutting off her air unless she really leans into it and she's learning not to do that.
The principle behind this collar's design is that it hangs loose on the dog's neck as long as the dog does not pull. If the dog starts to pull, the collar tightens around the dog's neck, but only tight enough to be snug and not choking.
I use this collar only when I go out with the dog for our exercise walk. For the most part my dog is under control, but when she sees a squirrel or another dog she wants to make a move and the collar will snug up and I can keep her with me. Because this collar is loose when there is no strain on it, it is possible to slip it over the dog's head. I always keep her regular 1" collar on her at the same time. It has her ID Tag attached.
The Martindale collar is humane and works quite well, but because of the slack factor, I don't think it's appropriate all situations.
Like her old collar, it contracts when pulled, though she doesn't really seem to need that kind of correction anymore. It's well made and will probably last at least as long as her old one did. The ring for tags/leash is thick and sturdy, which makes getting tags on it a bit of a hassle, so I ordered a tag clip as well -- in purple, of course.
Overall, this is a good basic martingale for better controlling dogs that are either prone to drag you along or slip out of their collars.
